3 core and earth on a light fitting

Thank you littlespark. We're playing safe with this one and have an electrician calling by to do a proper, safe job with the right equipment. PS yes it was both a proximity detector AND a neon screwdriver. Eeeek

3 core and earth on a light fitting

I'd hasten to add that with the wall switch off, all cables at the ceiling in the conservatory are dead. When the wall switch is on, only the brown cable at the ceiling is live and both grey and black cables at the ceiling are dead. I thought either the black or grey would be neutral but which?

3 core and earth on a light fitting

When the wall switch is on, only the brown coming from the ceiling is live. Grey and black coming from the ceiling are not live with the switch on or off.

3 core and earth on a light fitting

I thought as much but thought I'd ask. I wonder if when I go there tomorrow I'd get a clue by looking at the light switch to see if the grey or black was connected to L1 or L2?

3 core and earth on a light fitting

Good evening. My son in law has moved into a 5 year old house with a conservatory. There is a 3 core and earth lighting cable poked through from the house into the conservatory which has never been attached to a light fitting. There is only ONE switch serving this light NOT two. My question is...

Correctly closing off a dead twin and earth cable in a loft.

Correctly closing off a dead twin and earth cable in a loft. My old house used to have radial circuits serving night storage heaters. Those radials came from a dedicated consumer unit in the garage which has now been removed and all cables from it are now dead. Each night storage heater was...

Just removing the sheath on a ring main cable in a 3 terminal junction box.

Thank you Brian. I think that's the answer. I'll go belt and braces and slit open some yellow/green earth sleeving, put that over the bare earth and "close" it with yellow/green insulating tape. Yes I'm aware these junction boxes have to be accessable and I endeavour to make them visible as...

Just removing the sheath on a ring main cable in a 3 terminal junction box.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that! See I knew it was a good idea to ask about this on here. Can you provide a link to Lucien's comment, I have tried searching. So "if" the idea is an acceptable one, how DO I sleeve the bare earth?

Just removing the sheath on a ring main cable in a 3 terminal junction box.

Over the years as a DIY-er I've used the old brown 30A circular junction boxes to add spurs to ring mains. I like them as they are strong, secure and visible. I've ALWAYS followed the rules on domestic electricity . Until earlier this year I've been able to check with a cousin who's a...

Do Wago connectors always have to be in a box?

I can see your logic and I only really understand logic but sometimes rules appear to defy logic. I'm just trying to get it done correctly but this sounds a bit like a grey area open to interpretation. However I really appreciate all opinions from you guys

Do Wago connectors always have to be in a box?

The new rad is an addition to the current heating circuit with the flow and return pipes coming through the wall on the same floor, so no lifting of floorboards upstairs and yes, the cables come down the wall inside plastic conduit.

Do Wago connectors always have to be in a box?

Ah yes. Forgot about that, but you see that's why you are a proper electrician and I'm not lol

Do Wago connectors always have to be in a box?

Thanks for the reply especially the bit about earthing the back box. I'm certainly not doubting you but I wonder why it's not a good idea about the blanked off socket being behind the rad though? In my ignorance I thought I'd read somewhere that a permanent, covered connection was ok using the...

Do Wago connectors always have to be in a box?

I have a single socket sunk into a standard metal box in a plaster wall on a ring main. I want to put a radiator on that wall and use a blank cover on the front to close off the socket which will be behind the new radiator. I'll use Wago connectors on the old cable ends to ensure the ring...

Thank you telectrix. You've put my mind at rest. It just seemed odd that a 7400 watt appliance came with such thin wires to connect to the mains. Two other Bosch appliances (a built in oven - 3000 watts and built in microwave - 3000 watts) came with 2 core and earth factory fitted cables. They...

Is my Bosch mains cable up to the job or should I play safe and use larger?

Thank you James. The cable wasn't factory fitted, it came with the appliance all sealed up together from a major UK retailer (AO.com). These 2 pics are from the connection instructions and I'm working on an "assumption" that diagrams "1N" apply. Interesting enough, 2 other Bosch appliances, an...

Is my Bosch mains cable up to the job or should I play safe and use larger?

I know I shouldn't doubt a company like Bosch but some reassurance or suggestions from anyone here would help ease my mind. We've purchased a Bosch induction hob (Model Number PIE651BB1E/17) it comes with a 5 core flexible mains cable about 2 metres in length. I'm ok with the wiring aspect of...

Wiring up an induction hob - wanted to sense check if what I'm doing is correct

What an excellent post and series of answers. I'm replacing an old ceramic job with an almost identical Bosch induction hob to that of the original poster. So finding this post has resolved my query about the cabling BUT the 5 core cable supplied by Bosch with our 7.4kw induction hob is...
