More Gen Z Young People Than Ever Before Are Choosing To Learn A Trade Over Going To College Or University In A Move That Shows How Gen Z Want To Learn Hands On Rather Than In A Classroom

An apprentice is being observed in the construction industry.

The numbers of Gen Z young people, that is people born between 1997 and 2011, choosing to do an apprenticeship in a trade such as being an Electrician, Tiler or Plumber has increased by at least 16% in the past year as high tuition fees and cost of living is having an impact on the choices young people are making.

The amount of young people starting College or University has seen a significant drop whilst the popularity of vocational qualifications is on the increase. More and more 20 somethings are making the choice to learn a trade. As the economy and the cost of living crisis continue to affect everyone, people are realising that there is always a need for construction workers such as Electricians, Tilers and Plumbers and Renewable Energy Specialists. This need will not decline and now young people are realising that the industry is one of the most stable out there and very future proofed, the days of going to a college and doing A levels then a degree at University in a subject could be numbered.

With the soaring cost of Tuition Fees and the cost of living, many university students are having to work two or three part time jobs whilst finding time for studying and attending lectures. Starting working life in a mountain of debt just doesn’t seem to appeal to twenty – somethings any more. There no longer is the promise of a job after a degree unlike if people do an apprenticeship in a trade. Once the apprenticeship is completed there is almost a guaranteed job either with the placement company or another one.

Many technical colleges and course providers partner with local firms to provide placements for trainees to complete their work experience and learn on the job. There will always be a need for construction workers and this need will only increase as more houses are needed, more conversions to green energy are made and electric vehicles become a lot more mainstream.
