    Replacing consumer unit

Thanks for your comments. Hager does indeed get god reviews with the exception of their AFDD. Dave Savery did some pretty convincing tests on this rig and they turned out to be very poor at detecting arcing.

    Replacing consumer unit

Currently our CU is a plastic unit fitted around 2004 and it has 12 MCBs of which 5 have RCD protection. In terms of hours, how long would it take and how much roughly would it cost ( location London SE22 ) to replace this with a modern 16 way unit fitted with :- A) SPD B) Transformer for 12v...

    Earthing

I have had UK Power networks install an earthing block connected to the the sheathing of the incoming supply from the street. I want to acquire the earthing cable and organise a pull-through under the floor boards in readiness for the electrician comes to connect up both ends. The routing is a...

    Can it take RCBOs?

We have a 20 year old MK consumer unit with an RCD section covering 5 MCBs. It has several circuits which are not covered by RCD protection so my question is... would there be enough height inside the CU o accommodate RCBOs to cover the circuits in No's 1, 2 & 3 ways which have simple MCBs ?

LEDs not lighting with V-Com dimmer

Wow!! I reckon you cracked it.! I just checked the old halogens and they are 12v MR16. What threw me was that wiring to each was grey T&E and when I pulled each one out, there was no sign of a transformer. Also, all the other downlights in the kitchen and hall were 230volt. It's late now so I...

LEDs not lighting with V-Com dimmer

Many thanks for the guidance. I just wonder why the TLC guy missed that. As the dimmer I want is in a faceplate with two others, I reckon I will need the DM298GRID rather than DM298FP which is a single faceplate switch.

LEDs not lighting with V-Com dimmer

I specifically asked TLC-Direct as to which dimmer to use and they said V-Com The rating is 0 to 100W

LEDs not lighting with V-Com dimmer

I wanted to convert 5 halogen down lights with new LED fittings and got these from TLC https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/CLH2CSPW.htm together with a Varilight V-COM as per recommendations. Installed it all but the LEDs would not light up - even though I programmed the switch with 3 ON/OFF...

    Lighting switch with neon indicator?

Depends how desperate they are to do the business :)

    Lighting switch with neon indicator?

We have a bathroom which has lights (and fan) switched on by a single switch located outside by the door. I would like to replace this with a switch that has a neon indicator which would show when it is occupied. I know that neon indicators are common on 13 amp sockets and spur switches. How...

    Earthing

All the responses received have been gratefully appreciated and I have a better understanding of the installation. Given that the CU is 20 years old and was installed by a sub-contractor to the builder who did extensive works back in 2004, then I guess that explains a lot! The wiring in the CU...

    Earthing

Good point! The Sparkie didnt mention it. But it begs the question - should I have an RCBO fitted in that slot? The CU is MK and is 20 years old. Do you reckon it could accommodate the extra height of a compatible RCBO?

Yes, the new circuit is working just fine
