Hi guys, just wondering if anyone knows the best place to buy a reasonably priced test kit, I've been using my mates for a couple of months but he's landed a job in Ireland so I will have to buy one but haven't got the cash to buy new. Thanks in advance

Who in their right mind would use 2nd hand test equipment to take what should be precise measurements?
The forum sponsor 'tester shop' would be a good place to go, or else ask your wholesaler what they can do you deals on.

I would. But I'd get it calibrated/checked at the local place first. Daz

I don't see a problem in buying second hand, as long as it's calibrated then there's no problem.

if it passes calibration what is wrong with second hand test equipment?

as long as it has been looked after it should be fine

Yes as long as it is looked after it is fine, but how do you know how it has been looked after? It may have been bumped around or exposed to extreme temperatures/humidity

Calibration is not the be all and end. Especially not with the current trend for someone plugging it in to a check box and calling it calibration, which is what happens at the 'calibration day' at various wholesalers around here.

then there a fool for using it, sending it off to be calibrated using a proper calibrated test equipment is the way to go and using a benchtop multimeter is the way to go

Do you keep your MFT in one of these or something similar? Lol

A reputable calibration house will test all functions/ranges of the meter to make sure they are in spec. Then you can use a check at intervals throughout the year to make sure it isn't drifting on the IR/resistance ranges. Daz

If I do buy second hand then it will be sent to be calibrated properly, I already have a calibration company that I currently use. In an ideal world I would be buying new but unfortunately at the moment that may not be possible.

...I'm a bit staggered about people using second-hand kit,not having a "right mind"....

I reckon there is no difference between a brand-new purchased MFT,that is now a few years old,and a cared for MFT,bought second hand,a few years old.

As for not knowing its' history,a brand new meter, could have had a worse ride,in shipping, storage and delivery.

I have bought enough brand new kit,to have had some of it arrive in two halves, wet and inoperative.

One thing I've noticed from time on the forum about the guys in the UK is their reluctance to use any brands other than very high-end stuff like Fluke or Megger etc. There's a lot of other very good brands around that are a fraction of the price and they make very respectable kit. Try looking at Uni-t (Uni Trend) or SEW for example.
