hi, I have a dol starter motor, was working fine then suddenly the start button stopped working. I can manually operate it by pressing the black centre of the dol starter. here is a picture of it, if someone can help me with the problem. thanks

Andy it's not a starter motor, it's a DOL starter, things to try

1 Has the coil gone open circuit?
2 Has the Overload trip tripped out? try the reset button.
3 Is the control circuit fuse blown

Oh and it's not a good idea to randomly push the contactor in by hand you could have a locked rotor.
Good luck

Hi Andy, Welcome to the forum :)

Re' your query, your question is a bit broad, we need to know what if any is on the control circuit, what test results are for the control circuit, I assume you have checked the O/L unit hasn't tripped and needed resetting too.

It should be pretty easy to identify the issue here but other than a faulty start contact block I would edge my bets your stop circuit is open circuit or loss of power to control, if this is due to the O/L been in a tripped status then pushing the main contactor in manually is not a good idea as you could damage the motor.

Turn the power off and continuity test to find the break in the control circuit, drawing it out as you go.

If you go this way please make sure you carry out the correct safe isolation procedure, being a motor there may be other trades involved.

Well i did tell him to turn the power off, but i suspect he doesn't have isolation permits or procedures, so if this is the case he'd be better off leaving it to some other company that does have procedures and permits and doesn't need advice for a simple circuit from a sparky forum ☺

Oh sorry, but didn't you advise him to check the coil without isolating first?

Didn't tell him to check the coil just asked has it gone open circuit, maybe my phrasing was a bit ambiguous perhaps I should have said one of the causes could be an open circuit coil etc, but he is an Electrician, and as such should be aware of the safe isolation procedure, it was your post that hinted that being inexperienced he may not be aware of safe isolation, this post is probably going around in circles.

The OP is an Electrician so we can assume certain common sense practices, it seems that this is out of his field of experience hence he posted for a few hints and until he responds the thread is in stalemate tbh, but in the meantime if you two can stop bouncing off each other with nit picky comments and retorts it will be appreciated as it just pulls the thread down and doesn't help anyone. :) Play nice guys!
