Help with this please.

Got a call a yesterday about heating and hot water not working.

plumber installed a new 3 port valve. Apparently everything worked ok for 1 week then stopped.

The system includes a sterlad ideal w boiler (never seen before), potterton ep 2000 timer ch-hw, a 3 port valve, a pump.

i manged to sort the heating out but not the hot water, they have immersion heater anyway so they do have hot water.

Anyone could kindly help with it, much appreciated.

You need to check everything is switching as it should be. As its a Y-plan the cylinder thermostat will have all 3 terminals used...common will become live when HW is turned on the programmer, N.C will be joined with the orange of the valve, switched live to boiler and possibly the pump if the boiler doesn't have pump over run. The N.C terminal will be live if the water is below the desired temperature of the thermostat. N.O terminal will be connected to the grey on the valve and hot water off from programmer. The N.O terminal will become live when the water has hit the desired temperature of the thermostat or hot water is switched to off on the programmer (all of the above is when the CH is turned off on the programmer). I would take the cylinder thermostat off of the cylinder and turn the temperature all the way up, turn HW on the programmer, check that common on cylinder thermostat becomes live, in turn N.C should be live as thermostat is turned all the way up.

Did this plumber just teplace the head or the whole valve too. Seen it before that a new head gets fitted and because the valve is so badly seized the head lasts no time at all

He fitted a new valve flashed up the system, messed up the wiring and got paid 600£. Typical plumber

Just a question if someone could point me in right direction. They dont have a cylinder so therefore no cylinder stat they immersion heater. The HW on 6 where would it connect to please?

If they don't have a cylinder then where is the immersion heater installed??

If they don't have a cylinder then there can't be a hot water zone to control. The only thing they could have is control of DHW preheat of a combi boiler

It will be in that boarded-in feature,in the bathroom,next to the recently fitted shower cubicle :cool3: ...seen it before!

First plumber who arrived,said he would need more time to look at it...never come back.

It was a pals' sons' first house,and when i drilled a 30mm hole in their recently decorated bathroom wall,the lads' missus said i better have a plan for hiding the hole...i told her she had bigger worries. A peep through the orifice,revealed a 1970s' combination unit,with coils and an immersion.

Reminded me of the Egyptians...

Hello Gents, my fault really took customers word for it, yes there is cylinder stat Honeywell L641A. The problem was the 3 port valve packed up only one week old.

By a strange coincidence I was in our local Screwflux t'other day gettin some bits 'n' bobs and there was a heating gadgee in to return a faulty 3 port valve that he had bought the previous week.

They don't make 3 port valves like they used to! :nonod:

to be honest it was plumbcenter brand so make what you wish of it. We fitted the a honeywell one so hopefully all ok.

Plumb centre branded 3ports are Honeywell with a different lid. The body and internals are exactly the same.

Help with this please.
