hi there im thinking of getting some sort of chasing machine i already have a dust extractor anyone recommend one. just for odd chases is it worth it . i was thinking of a makita cordless grinder i know i couldnt use the extractor on that but whats the dust like when cutting out boxes and chases with one.

anyone shed a light on it.

Yankee screwdrivers were the work of the Devil, and if you've ever trapped the skin on your hand in one you will agree. bloody horrible things
They were the equivalent of the cordless combi drill at the time, i.e. must have accessory. Remember thinking then I was rather cool with the 18" model :)

Just for Midwest

Just Phillips and flatheads or can you get posidrive as well? - would help if they made a modern version with 1/4 hex drive - could have its uses!

You can tell the old boys used to use them because whenever you come across anything from the 60-70's it's always held up with a bloody 7" flathead rusty screw

For wall chases, I use the Erbauer one from Screwfix, cost £100. Fits my vac, it's perfect especially when you consider the price against a Hilti or Makita.

For sinking wall boxes, I mark out with pencil and stitch drill with a 10mm bit, then use a 4lb club hammer, a cold chisel to break out and finish with a scutch chisel.

Hope this helps.

... BUT I still have a Rawlplug jumper ...
No doubt with the end now resembling a mushroom?
Do you still have those bloody awful fibre plugs that went with it? They always fell to bits and dropped out. Nothing that sticking matchsticks in the hole couldn't fix though.
(I'm not as young as I look :) )

I had an original American version,as a kid, which had bits retained in the handle,it also had several straight fluted drill bits, for piloting.

If your looking for the Yankees, they are in the same skip as the shovels and transportables...:)

We use a sparky chaser from screw fix think it was around £150 can't beat it for keeping the dust down just hook it up to hoover pluss it makes a nice clean cut. Wouldn't use a grinder although people do room will be full of dust in seconds.

I only do the odd bit of chasing so bought myself a Erbaur chasing maching from Screwfix and a cheap dust extractor off fleabay the chaser was £99.99 and hoover was £50 never looked back, even came with cutting discs. Had it a few years now and never had a problem.

Have a Metabo wall chaser and a DeWalt 35Litre M class vacuum to suck up the dust. You'd not even know you're grinding in regards dust, unless the thing needs emptied of course lol

No blowing bits of cement dust out your nostrils for 3-4 days after tracking lol

Had a load of kit stolen couple months back so for a job i had booked in, i bought a titan chaser and a titan wet/dry hoover, together cost about £120, didn't expect too much but was actually quite surprised in the quality and how well the titan hoover sucked up the dust whilst chasing.
The Titan hoover is really quite powerful, had hardly any dust whilst chasing and the kit is still working now, This titan screwfix kit isn't too bad. I wont be spending hundreds on another premium chaser as so far this cheap titan one has done just as good a job.
