Hi I have come home and at the bottom of my drive way have noticed this thing bolted about 7ft up the telegraph pole with a laser/laser radiation warning sticker on it.

Anyone know what this is and what it does or what all the numbers mean?

For sure it's a fibre optic repeater / booster,
The radiation warning is for the laser diode.
But unless your looking down the fibre when it's on,
Then their is no problems.

Hate to disagree, but I don't believe it's a repeater... reasoning... only two 'cables' entering (if it was a repeater I would expect to see a third - the power supply), plus there is no warning about the presence of potentially hazardous voltages you might expect if there was a power supply present in there. Plus I don't believe Prysmian make repeaters.

The laser radiation warning is required as if you bend a fibre beyond it's minimum bend radius there is a good chance the reflection fibres require to work will break down (the angle of incidence will be too great) allowing laser radiation to be emitted from the sides of the fibre, whilst not as potent as looking down the end of a fibre, it is still strong enough to cause permanent retinal damage.

some years ago, i has an operation for piles. the surgeon used a laser. ..... permanent rectal damage. so i know what you mean.:eek::eek:.

oh bugger you said retinal. need to go to specsavers.
