Got called out to a commercial kitchen, the job stated that they had no gas as the intake fans had failed.

Turned up an the "local spark" had bypassed the Merlin CT1250 and effectively hard wired the gas valve, intake and extract fan and completely omitted the E stop.

None of the wiring inside the control panel was labelled so everything would have to have been identified and a new panel wired in.

The old panel had a failed PSU and relays, why?

Apparently it "went brown" within a few weeks of installation 6 years ago.

Why?

Was he original install cosier?

What am I getting involved in?

....drops shoulder and heads for the exit....

Right call?

Or need to grow a pair?

Why not just fit a replacement

There will be a lot more wrong in that place .Dont be the last one in before a FN explosion etc .They will try to blame you

Don’t be shy it is only two current sensors and a supply to the gas valve.

That's what my vice like sphincter was telling me.

I did confer with the fount of all things gas, my brother, and his advise was to stock up on vasaline or walk.

Did the "local spark" understand the implications of what he was doing bypassing the GAS SAFETY system as he obviously didn't understand why it was fitted
I would have walked at that point and left it to him to find the fault and repair it

Always check with your insurance that you are covered for this kind of work, as simple a concept it may be or seem this is a safety system that requires knowledge of the underlying regulations, these fall outside of the BS7671 standard, you even breath on this equipment and you become liable for the whole circuit and possible consequences of it failure to operate safely when required.
I dare say this would need more than a test cert and would require a full user manual and log book to keep records of all testing, alterations, repairs and faults etc but this is guess work as I don't have the relevant standards to hand and was just relating a commercial/industrial fire alarm system requirements to it been that it is a safety critical system.
In reflection here, walking away was a wise move.
