Hey guys,

I'm new here so please let me know if I'm breaking any rules. Can someone nudge me in the right direction for the attached? So I can do some research.

It looks like part of an alarm or intercom system where the "installer" couldn't be arsed doing the job properly - like using junction boxes ! Is this in a block of flats or a converted house ?
Hey Simon - thanks a lot for the help. This is a house I'm renovating (and living in). Unfortunately there seems to be lots of things similar, like this below. Trying to work my way through it bit by bit!

It’s called a mess. My advice would be to get a competent electrician to do an inspection for you (and I’d pay them to be slightly more thorough than a standard EICR) to first work out what all your issues are. THEN you can work out a program of how to fix them.

Well that appears to be a really bad bodge involving T&E plus something else. Based on the two pictures posted so far, I would assume there's a lot of other bodges yet to be found and you should consider the whole of the electrical installation to be of questionable safety until proved otherwise.

Yep I assume so too. I have recently completed my domestic installers and 18th edition but my lack of experience is really showing at the moment! Thanks for all the help guys
