Morning all,
Just after a bit of knowledge!!
Been to a job to move a light switch. When I got there noticed a callender main cut out . The incoming cable is enclosed in conduit and main earth has been bonded to that. The conduit looks like it goes straight through wall into next door as it is a row of 4 cottages. Did Zs and got 13ohms. Had a look for earth stake but have not seen anything.
is this system not uncommon in previous yrs. it looks like house has had new db and some new circuits fitted fairly recently as it has a split load board and new cable colour.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I have tried to post a photo.
Thanks

Without accessing the other side it is difficult to say, the earth may just be earthing the conduit and not providing an earth as such plus it looks quite recent.

Earth via conduit is not uncommon and can be perfectly satisfactory, but as mentioned above one cannot assume that every conduit is properly earthed at source. The ring terminal under one of the cover screws of the inspection elbow is not correct practice and suggests an afterthought, i.e. that was not supposed to be the means of earthing.

I would not be surprised to find that the conduit is not connected to the supply earth where the shared service splits, and the installation is getting its earth via the bonding.
