Hi All,

I'm looking to purchase a soldering heat gun/station to help with the removal of a surface mounted chip soldering to a motherboard.

I'm struggling to find any recommendations/reviews online (UK based), just wondering if anyone out there has had any experience buying a decent one from say Amazon/eBay/AliExpress?

Budget is around £60-£90.

Thanks!

You don't say if this is to remove a specific chip/package (e.g. QFN, QFP IC package) or for general use on a variety of chips. One approach is to buy a selection of nozzles for a standard hot air gun, e.g. PiHut seem to have a 10-piece kit of nozzles for £24, but you also need the heat gun, unless you already have one.

You can get dedicated soldering iron rework tips for some soldering systems, but the cost can rapidly escalate way beyond what you mention (Metcal, for example, which I use).

The chip is a BIOS chip, a replacement for my laptop due to it overheating.

I think I'd prefer to have a dedicated rework soldering station, with the hot air gun attached with temperature and air speed adjustments/read outs - I've always thought they look cool as well as reassuring that you're working at the right temperature.

If you know of any models, please post them here.

Thanks!

The SMD rework station I use is the csl 825A which has a hot air torch and a vacuum pickup to lift the chip off it came with 4 nozzles but you can buy more of different sizes and shapes as the work requires, it can be bought online for about £120
