Two way switch only working one way after plastering

Hi,

I had some builders to square off my office and replaster. When the brickwork was exposed there was a wire exposed but were unsure what it was for…leading down from the loft down the wall and under the floorboards in my office. Now the work is finished my landing light (completely separate from office) won’t switch on. Well to be exact it happens that it will switch on using the downstairs switch but not from the upstairs switch which is to the opposite end of the landing to the office. Somehow the two way switch has been compromised by the work done. Is it a matter of maybe the wiring just coming loose as they have sought to conceal the wire behind the plasterboard? Only a small part of the wire remains exposed on the office, where the skirting and section of floor board is to go in. Firstly is it safe and should I keep the light off completely? Any advice would be welcome. PS this is an old terrace and the office is in the outrigger that has a very shallow pitch and not accessible. The main roof is however accessible. I can see wires in the main attic which presumably serve all the upstairs lights, including I assume the landing light.

No not if it is part of the 2 way switch circuit. Even though the light is OFF the wire could still be LIVE!

Just to clarify, is it a single wire or do you mean single cable which could include several wires?

You'd best get a local sparks to have a look though.

If it was working before they plastered then it is likely they have done something wrong. However, maybe your wiring was in poor condition and it wasn't 100% their fault. You'll never really know.
You can ask them to return to fix it, they may or may not. if they don't, then you'll have to bite the bullet and get an electrician in for an hour or so.

Thanks all. It’s a cable as opposed to single wire. Oddly enough I tried the upstairs switch again and now the light works using both switches. No idea why it stopped and now works.

As I said really odd and the only thing I can think that was touched was the cable when doing the plastering. I guess I could take the switch off the wall and have a look. It is old and could be simply wear and tear but quite a big coincidence that briefly stopped working the day the work was done

I have just noticed the cable I mentioned earlier that runs from the loft, down behind the plastered wall and into the floorboards below has no slack whatsoever. The issue I have is having had the corner chimney breast removed and the room squared up off, I will have issue fitting floorboard and skirting to the gap that has been left, with the wire having no give at all. I was assuming it was serving light given the issue I had queried earlier but now unsure as to what it servesnif not the light. It will need splicing and extending to give the necessary slack for it to fit. But without knowing what the cable is for how can ensure the power to that cable can be turned off before attempting any such works. Guess I need to call in an electrician

A non contact voltage indicator (Voltstick) would be useful to identify this, but note that they should only be used to indicate that a circuit is probably live, NEVER to indicate that it's definitely not.
The wire could even be an old unused one, and not connected to anything.

You could just turn off everything in the house. Right back to a service isolator if you have one…. Then it’s a very high chance it will be safe to cut.
