how many wires can you get in one JB

Just thought that I'd share this one with you. All I had to do was add a second switch to the hallway light. Not too complicated. The ceiling rose only had the switched live, neutral and earth connected to it, so, follow the wire back to where it all comes from... That will be the JB with nine cables coming from it. There were 4 lights feed and switched from on JB.Some of the cable had the outer grey insulation removed so that it would fit into the JB. Add to that the fact that some one had then spurred off it for a socket ( wired in 2.5 of course ) so that they could plug in the house alarm. Fantastic. On the plus side the JB was accessible for testing.
Guess what I'm rewiring tomorrow.

Lol its an art form fitting all them in dont you know!! Iv come across this several times I wonder how the hell they jam them all in!

and all the cores too? i have come across old jb's where the earths were all outside the jb twisted together with no sleeving!!!

Yes I've seen that, as well.
Don't bother attempting to get the sheaths inside the JB, and then just twist the CPCs together, no need for a connector or anything.

Best I've seen was 7 cables in one JB with cpc's twisted together outsie of the JB. Only 4 of the cables had cpc's too.

I've seen a set up where one junction box wasn't enough so there was two with an 8 inch piece of T&E to link them can't remember how many cables were connected but it was the proverbial rats nest

The Spark managed 8 cables into this one and one of the cable2 went to another JB a few inches away with a further 7 in -

Oh yes, he certainly didn't skimp on his bodge jobbing. I appreciate this was common practice in days gone-by but it's still pants IMHO!

Truth is Richy it was common practice years gone by I was taught to actually cut the CPC off of lighting circuits, and also taught to twist CPCs together !!

The reasoning behind it mate was light circuits unless metal never need earth conductors as they were, and by twisting earth conductors together especially on ring finals it ensured continuity of the conductor, I was in fact rollocked for not twisting them together once, yes times have changed mate.

That was the accepted way of doing things at JB's in domestics years ago, before the use of even plain green sleeving. Normally all the earths were directed separately away from the T&E under the JB and then twisted together!! ....lol!!

If the wiring is OK swap the existing JB for one of these. I have used them in the same situation and it tidies things up no end. (must be accesable though and needs fixing/cables clipping)
