I reckon they are the original design/construction. A lot of houses around here are like this.
Gonna have to wait until the weekend to find out, i think...

I would get up there and carefully get the top tile off and you will be able to see the make up of the build, i would also have a look at next door without the cladding for the possible asbestos if theirs is more original
Re: 2 questions in 1 (alarm): Cable routing from outside into loft and mounting sound
Finally got some photos.
Looks like 2x1 battens on top of bricks.
It is an asbestos soffit underneath the uPVC, but I had my respirator ready for drilling a single hole (from a distance too), poking my rod through and then pulling cable back through once I had attached it to the rod in the loft.
It was getting dark by the time my wife release me from her presence, so I have just got to mount the sounder tomorrow whilst it is light (after church in the afternoon methinks).
Well it is attached and I did it by drilling through the top tiles so that the top 2 screws went in to the top-most batten.
Then, since the other screw holes wouldn't be able to line up with another batten, I drilled 7mm holes in the relavent positions which went through 2 tiles. I hammered brown rawl plugs in and then fixed the sounder in to place.
Jobs a goodun.
Now I know how to approach this situation in the future.
I love learning skills like this!
Thanks all for your guidance.
