i want to fix an extractor fan in a bathroom. i cannot vent through the roof so can only vent through the outside wall and then only directly over the bath which is in zone 2.
the extractor will be about 1.5 metres above the bath
i intend to power off the lighting circuit which is already protected by an RCBO 6 amp.
is it ok to fit a 240v extractor (as i have the RCBO) or is a 12v required.
i would welcome your thoughts.

A court case.... The guy who fitted a fan on a 6A MCB and it burnt out causing a fire was prosecuted for not following manufacturers instructions. That is why 3 amp MCB's are now made.
I have some 3A MCBs that must be at least 15 years old so not a new innovation, just the resurfacing of an o1d idea.

i would probably lodge a counter claim to the manufacturer of the fan about why it burnt out!! its got to go faulty to catch fire... and if it goes faulty it will blow a 3a fuse and drop a 6a mcb if it shorts as the current overload will be massive..!

Common sense would agree with you. However, the point was he contravened the regs by now following manufacturers instructions... A point I keep making when people say they can get away with 6mm on an 8.5 KW shower. Maybe you can, but many instructions now tell you to only use with 10mm cable.

probably not as you would have to Fuse BOTH live conductors and it would make it bulky and it would have to be made larger to fit a 2g back box rather than single...!

You could fuse a comm then com feeds L1 so would only need 1 fuse, maybe have to make the switch a little smaller to accomodate the fuse

lighting feed into sw fused spur (3a fuse),load to bathroom light, twin to pull sw and 3core from bathroom light to fan.I know the bathroom would be in darkness if switched the spur off but, so what. Would satisfy most cases

I'm familiar with many domestic extractor fans which are primarily class 2 (double insulated) and consequently are not required to be earthed...
