I didnt get a chance to go up and have a look today, been rushed off my feet! I will be heading up tommorow and cleaning it up, its covered in crap and sawdust :/ If thats all it will take, thats brilliant. I will check everything inside does its job, and hopefully were onto a winner!

Well, i went up to the workshop today, and had a good look. First i grabbed the old starter, it looks a bit beyond it, i dont think, without alot of work anyway, its worth building it back up.
Heres what the faceplate looks like

Everything is very rusty, and would need re-winding with new coated wire.

Anyway, the motor itself. I dont think it is switching when it is up to full speed, im not exactly sure what is supposed to happen!
I started it up under the load of the saw and belts etc, and it doesnt change pitch or anything when up to speed. I removed the belts to see whther the load of the saw was holding the motor back, and it wasnt achieving full speed. When i turned it on no load, it got up to speed and then half a second after, it started to accelerate alot, and it was constantly accelerating, so i switched it off in fear of it breaking. When it was speeding up under no load, the brushes were sparking blue very brightly!

Before it was started, i cleaned the surface up a little, and wiggled the brushes to ensure they are free to move.

Heres what it looks like inside, as much as i could get with my camera anyway.

And finally, behind the connection plate, after blowing the sawdust out :/

The brushes have loads of life left in them, but im not sure whether i should take the motor off and strip it right down to clean it out entirely, and see whether the shorting ring is moving?

maybe strip the motor down and get at it with an airduster/air hose and an old paintbrush, oil or grease where needed, re-do electrical tags and terminals etc.....

looks like the resistors are a steel/tungsten wire which used to be laquered and that has perished off and then rusted...could be an interesting project......

I will get back to you on that...

Have a look on RS for 655-644 it's a complete ready built current regulator unit (£32-99). (United Automation Ltd CSR2) It will need a SPST switch to short it out when the motors up to speed.

Just give the motor a good blow out with an airline and make sure the brushes slide freely in the holders.

PS I just love that starter, brings back memories.

Well, that looks good, but i dont quite understand how i would connect it, and the spst switch?

Here you go. It's all manual operation so whoever uses it must know to turn the pot to minimum and make sure the switch is open. Once the motors at full speed close the switch.

if not getting the resistors rewound (which is doable) what about refitting with High power resistors from RSwww with suitable brackets, insulation etc...good project...

Why? I used one for years on a variable speed hoist.

Well, cheers tony, i am very grateful for the help, i will get one of these and set to work installing it! Would you reccomend having a 14 amp overload to protect the regulator? I would probably end up putting it into a DOL box, try and make it look neat(ish!). Cheers again.

The ideal would be push button start and stop with auto ramp up. £££££££
