Here's an example of when you undersize too much:
14 x Sharp NU-R240J5 (240w) = 3360W
SMA SB3000HF (remember Gavin-A's commnents above)
I wouldn't consider that the 10/05/2013 was a particularly good day for generation, so on a GOOD day.

also, IMO that's a good example of a well matched system - it may limit slightly at peak, but the inverter will operate on average at 0.6% greater efficiency throughout the year, which results in greater overall output per year per kWp installed than for 3kWp of panels on that inverter... and the extra generation is when you actually might use it rather than when it's mostly being exported (ok Immersun etc might change that situation a bit, but the point still stands) - figures from sunny design, and the logic behind them can be clearly seen from the efficiency curve of the inverters.

I don't really know why you've described that as undersizing too much.
