Soon I will be leaving school and I would like some advice.

I'm deciding on being an Electrician or a Electrical Engineer. I wan't to be earning the highest pay possible in the future and I need some advice on what courses to take to get the qualifications I need to start work and maybe become self-employed in the future owning my own business depending on what I chose to pursue.

Grades:

Maths - C
English - Predicted C (taking the exam Tuesday)
Science - C
BTEC Science - Predicted Merit (equivalent 2x GCSE)
BTEC Business - Merit. (equivalent 4x GCSE's)
Design Technology - Predicted C
Preparation for working life (/PSHCE) - Level 2

I will be applying for courses on this website (Leeds Building College)
Course Search | Apprenticeships Leeds | Construction Courses Leeds | Leeds College of Building

If anyone could link me to a course that would help me get the qualifications I would need for future experiences that would be much appreciated!

I would recommend you try and get some work experience in both fields which may help you decide.

I mentor students and it is surprising how many of them have no idea about what they want or even why they are on their course!

By the way BTec Business is worth 2 GCSE not 4. How do I know this because my daughter is doing 17 GCSEs

There's no "'" in want. Learn that before Tuesday buddy! :)

like others have said, its experience you need at the moment. try getting an apprenticeship with a company that will pay you to "earn as you learn".
Revise hard for your exams mate, its those letters that mean the world when your applying for jobs!!

good luck, i hope you achieve wot you want to.

Electrical engineer route - BTEC National diploma level 3 & nvq3 (try get an apprenticeship ASAP I'd go for either maintenance or a company that does commercial/industrial installation for the best experience. You'll have a choice between electrical and electronic engineering or installation at BTEC whichever you take depends on which route really. Then HNC/HND in electrical/electronic engineering. And if you want after that the same at uni. As for jobs during your college time/if you get an apprenticeship you'll hear and find out about different jobs and gain more of an understanding of what they entail then you can start to choose yourself. Definitely get practical experience though.

Getting some job just to g et money is stupid. You would get bored if thats not your calling. Try looking at things you enjoy doing and come up with a good job for yourself.

If you wish being electrician still:

College: C&G 2330 or 2365 Level 2 and 3 AND NVQ Level 3 (however its done on-site and you need to be employed)
C&G 2395 is inspection and testing, would be great to have. And AM2 course
Uni: I have no idea what courses there is.

If you want them money, try getting an apprenticeship and maybe getting into London Underground or Rail Company, as they pay good wages.

Join the Navy, seriously, their engineering courses trounce anyone elses, they actually pay for your ruddy training too. You get some serious experience, some serious team working skills and if you really put the effort in then when you come out you can walk into six figure jobs no problem...I know several ex Navy Engineers and they earn serious wedge.

Both the IET and CIBSE have schemes to allow you to work your way to chartered status status whilst a student, inside or outside the military, but they really support the military side of things.

I can assure you getting into the Navy will not be easy, you need to know what you want and why you want it, you have to sell yourself big time to pass muster, but it is seriously worth the effort. #

If the Navy blow you off then the RAF on the aircraft side is another good route to go, your exam results are not the greatest but they are sufficient for many of the true engineering courses the RAF run.

This is the route you should give serious consideration too if you want the best training that will also cost you nothing. Wages are not great in the military, but do 15 years in, get qualified, get chartered and when you come out with your head held high you can rightly walk into jobs that today would pay £75K plus.

Tis the route this knucklehead should have done instead of the mixed route I did!
