Tidy Max

Alright chaps, how does this sound?

Dear.........

It is with great compunction that I am giving you this notice of resignation. I have enjoyed the majority of my time at the company however I feel It is time to leave. I will work two working weeks’ notice unless this is of major inconvenience to you or it causes any major problems with the work schedule. Please note I will still be available as a sub contractor.

I very much hope to see and work with you again and I thank you for the time in which you have employed me.

Never written one before so i have no idea what you are supposed to put in one!

Any input much appreciated because its going in today.

Notice periods are usually set by your pay period.

Weekly = 1 week notice unless different agreement in writing.
Monthly = 2 weeks by Employee and 1 month by Employer, can be altered by mutual agreement in writing.

The above is irrelevant for Gross Misconduct and some other "offences" that may see you dismissed without warning. However the Employer is legally required to state the reasons in writing, and normally you are suspended and required to attend a disciplinary hearing in anything from 7-28 days. Normally this should be paid suspension, only rarely does the law to allow unpaid suspension and normally this would be were the offence is of a criminal nature.

Dear Mr. Boss:
I'm thrilled to inform you that I'm resigning.
I have been waiting for what seems like forever to inform you that I’m resigning. I’ve hated worked for the company since the day I was hired. I don’t like the work, and I don’t like you.
I am tendering my resignation effective immediately and I’m heading for the open road. I bought a Harley and a leather jacket and my girlfriend, Denise, is coming along. It was a little tough to find a jacket to fit her, but we managed.
I know you would like me to help you with a transition, but I won’t. Have fun figuring out the files on my computer. I can’t even figure them out most of the time.
Oh, speaking of computers, you’ll need to figure out the passwords to all our online resources. I forgot to keep a list of them, so have fun with that.
I’m sure you’d like to have a going away party for me. However, I’m not interested in the stale cookies and nasty punch that constitutes saying goodbye at this company.
Don’t worry about writing me a reference, even though I’m sure you’d be glad to recommend my work. I don’t need or want one. I don’t need references where I’m heading. So, consider our bridges burnt.
See ya,
Happy To Be Gone

I like to keep it as short and sweet as possible to avoid saying the wrong thing.
Something along the lines of:

Dear [their name]
I will be finishing employment with [company name] on [date], allowing [notice period] days notice.

Yours sincerely,
Adam W.

If you want to subbie for them in the future you could extend it a bit, something along the lines of:

Dear [their name]
I will be finishing employment with [company name] on [date], allowing [notice period] days notice.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the opportunities you have provided me during my time with the company and hope I may subcontract to you in the future.

Yours sincerely,
Tidy Max.

If you have a contract, check notice period otherwise you can be held in breach of contract

Notice period is often linked to period of employment

Check with CAB or ACAS

I expect they could hold you in breach of contract if they wanted to make a point, but it's unlikely to be worth the hassle for what they're likely to gain from it.

Congratulations. First use of the word "compunction" I have ever seen written down. lol.

It's fine. It doesn't matter too much what it says as you should be giving it to your boss in person, explaining what it is and your reasons to him verbally. The letter is just to make it official. Always best to do thing face to face giving your employer the respect they deserve, especially if you intend to subby to them in the future.

It is with much regret that I find myself having to tender my resignation. Because {reason}

I therefore give the required {time} notice of my intension to leave my employment with {Company name}, with effect from {date}

Yours most sincerely,

Don’t waffle, you are making a statement!

I didn’t want to leave, I enjoyed the job. The company didn’t want me to leave. Unfortunately we reached an impasse.

The reason I gave lead to a change of company policy and two years later I went back on a higher salary and stayed until I retired.

As someone noted, the period of notice can be linked to you’re service with the company.

This is not related to the previous post.

I left my first job after 23 years, it was due to me electing for voluntary redundancy. With my period of service, six months notice!
With redundancy the company can offer ½ you’re notice as pay in lieu. That got it down to three months.
I was owed a months holiday so we knocked that off.

The works was going through a major reorganisation. I was asked “would I mind” doing the final two months on permanent nights as they wouldn’t have an engineer on nights. OK suits me, “how about me doing 12Hr nights so you have more time covered”. They agreed, six months notice ended up at under five weeks.

“Would I mind” “permanent nights” Start about 20:00, supper with the plant lads about 23:00, I’d got a camp bed in the office, go home when I woke up. If I didn’t get 7Hrs sleep I’d be in a foul temper in the morning! I was commuting 60 miles a day to go to bed!

It was a classic voluntary redundancy situation.
The company knows who they want to get rid of. So for me to get redundancy someone had to take my position. The guy they wanted to get rid of didn’t want to come out of the office and go back on the plant. If he didn’t accept my position he would be made redundant!
His first child had just been born but he just wouldn’t see the sense in transferring to my job!
I’d be stuck in a position I didn’t want, he’d be redundant.
In the end I lost my temper and dragged him in to the MD’s office. The outcome, I got what I wanted, he got a higher paid and secure position.

Some people…………….
