Just a quick question, need to add some lighting to an existing circuit, during Pre tests found zs value exceeds maximum permitted, it is a long circuit to be fair around 200m, it is 1.5mm twin. It is on a 10amp type b at the minute cant drop it to a 6A due to the amount of fittings on the circuit. There is a sub board half way round the building in the lift motor room I have the choice of re feeding the second half from this board which is possible but the other problem is it has a 110v emergency back up supply to each fitting which is the same length. Would it be deemed acceptable to pick up a 4mm earth from the sub board half way round into the circuit to bring the zs down? I really can't think of another way around this unless anyone has an idea?

And hopefully some tasty remedials as well.

Funny enough I have done a few remedials for my lasses nursing homes, most were the dreaded BS 3036 semi enclosed boards that over the years have had MCB conversions one and the covers cuts exposing the copper bus.

Not sure what our thinking was in the good ole days but you go in and find about 4 or 5 8 way boards all on different phases, so I've been stripping them out and fitting Merin TP & N Boards and also installing EM lighting for the homes has a few have fire audits and the photoluminescent signs were deemed inadequate................never realised what a minefield EM lighting is now a days

Gone are the days of sticking a few bulkheads up in corridors and escape boxes over doors
to be fair to them...most of them have been OK....last one i did i found about half dozen 3s...and a couple of 1s....

saying that i have noted that none of the socket outlets have any additional protection (RCDs)....
and it just so happens that i`v come into ownership of a load of squareD QO-E RCBOs to BS4293....

loads of em...and i can get more...if i like

Here was another one. Everything tested ok and really apart from

134.1.1 concerning workmanship, which is always open to interpretation
Section 526 and 526.(iv) number of cables to be connected, some of those MCB had 3/4cables in them
3rd MCB 16amp with the 3 cables in it was feeding 31, yes 31 sockets, all doubles so I guess 132.1 (ii) could be invoked
All the MCBs are type 1 BS 3871 which have a Ka of 1. The Ipf of this board was Ka 3.2. I know that for the regulation and testing you can take the original which has a BS 1361 Type II and therefore 33Ka and so it was acceptable, but some of the circuits Zs/Ipf were over the 1ka which brings in Regulation 434.5.1
There were various other labeling factors, ie colours etc
IP factors of holes where cables have been removed and just left open

But after testing I had to really give it a satisfactory because the labels and holes I did at the time and so with a satisfactory result this board and circuits were deemed safe.

But is it really. It conforms to every regulation I quoted for the client, but do you as electricians think it is fit for purpose?

Yes in a covering letter I listed recommendations and luckily the client realised that a new board was needed and I'm doing it in the New Year. But my EICR past and really the client could have said swivel I want to keep this for another 40+ years
