    Car battery replacement

I have had an N-reg Cavalier in long term storage during which time someone has deprived me to the battery. I suppose I could get a replacement from a breaker's yard but then I would not know the security code and the radio would be useless. The guys that designed such units obviously aimed to...

    Loose cable, clamp remedy for

What I think I'm looking for is what I would call a "cable clamp" - in the sense of a clip that can be screwed into a base but has a quick release "latch" that permits temporary removal of the cable without unscrewing. May be there is a technical term for this?

    Loose cable, clamp remedy for

Thanks. I think that in the circs the extension lead is plenty long enough and the problem has more to do with dislodging the circuit breaker and plug in their location. I have had a quick google for cable clips and clamps and of course there is a huge range of options. Some look more viable...

    Loose cable, clamp remedy for

Imagine please a long extension cable with an electric mower at one end and a circuit breaker plugged into a wall socket in an inaccessible place at the other. It is not unusual for me to inadvertently unknowingly put pressure on the system such that the plug or the circuit breaker no longer...

Battery 20v Lithium-ion not holding charge

Tks for your clear answer to Q 1. I will save myself the expense. But there are many 20 V battery op machines on sale. How can one tell the difference in power output between the bottom and top of the range? Re 2 I have got a second battery for emergency use (ex scrapyard). I would like to...

Battery 20v Lithium-ion not holding charge

    1. I have an Aldi Cordless Hedge Trimmer, powered by a 20 V Lithium-Ion battery. It is manifestly under-powered - jams frequently - and their tec support cannot offer any advice ("At that price what do you expect?"!!) I see however that you can run the machine with an optional 40 V battery...

    Evaluation of SV benefits

Am I right in concluding that, contrary to my original assumptions, it is not possible to calculate the energy consumption "savings" you achieve by installing solar panels (apart from the FIT credits)? I can't just take the total kWh generated as per my meter readings, multiply this by the unit...

    Socket overload danger?

Sorry if this was ambiguous. The reason that the cooker master switch itself is almost always "off" is because I use the microwaves instead of the cooker (!) Once in a blue moon I would switch the cooker on. The socket in the console next to the cooker switch is what I have the extension lead...

    Socket overload danger?

The textbook solution would be to put in a separate extra single or double 13A socket as you say. This would however be a messy operation involving a plasterer / decorator in addition to an electrician. The question is therefore: Is there a less-than-ideal alternative "solution" that I could...

    Socket overload danger?

Yea, it's him what put me onto Electricians Forum with my query in the first place :)

    Socket overload danger?

The total amps for everything (5 items) comes to 24.5 of which 13 are accounted for by the kettle.

    Socket overload danger?

The above advice, tks, would seem in total to overrule what I concluded was the logical solution: To have a "circuit splitter" plugged into the cooker console socket that would separate the output from the 32 A supply into two independent circuits each protected by a 13 A fuse. I don't know if...

Oops duplicated by mistake, can't remove!

    Socket overload danger?

So that would allow me to run 1 kettle's worth of current through my extension with only a fraction to spare. Whilst I am sure that I must have exceeded this on many occasions in the past, caution tells me that it would be better to split the circuits as above taking into account what this...

    Socket overload danger?

I would not rule that out though it would not be simple. In the interim I'm thinking of using a 2-way adaptor (correct term?) to split the kettle circuit off from the other appliances to provide an extra safety margin in case I switch it on "by mistake".

    Socket overload danger?

Thanks. The conclusion that I have arrived at is not to use the kettle in conjunction with anything else, only solo, in addition to my smoke alarm and fire extinguisher. May not tick all the boxes, but is what gut feel has been telling me over the past umpteen years. Hopefully sticking to 13 A...

    Socket overload danger?

Thanks that was my confusion - the limit of my "kitchen socket". To prevent extension lead melt down, as you advise, how can I calculate the amps taken by my various appliances in order to stay within 13 A overall? I have forgotten the conversion factor. I think my UK voltage is 230V?

    Socket overload danger?

Logical solution I accept but "finding a different socket" would be far more hassle than applying informed common sense as I have tried to do up to now. >> If the kettle is switched on what leeway do I have to use any of the other items at the same time? There is a consumer unit installed in...

    Socket overload danger?

In my kitchen there is a "Socket On Off" switch in the same console as the cooker master on/off switch. The cooker switch is almost always off. An extension lead to the "Socket On/Off" switch has the following appliances attached 1. 14.5w low energy lamp 2. Microwave over 650 W output 3...
