    Sight for sore eyeing

Interesting how many opticians prescribe driving glasses when legally as long as you can read a number plate at the prescribed distance your sight is adequate.

wiring a ring in 2.5 is no longer acceptable?

Surely it depends on the installation method and the rating of the MCB? Nowadays ring mains often aren't required to carry 32A so if on a 20A breaker or even a 16A then 2.5mm maybe ok. Its all down to the calculations. I've just done a ring main for a loft conversion but was able to minimise the...

    Battery / Alternator tester

Those LEDs come on at predetermined voltages and the charge one is probably reading that the battery is actually fully charge and some. My wife's car has daylight running lights added and they are trigged direct from the battery with no switched feed. When you start up and the alternator kicks...

    quoting for work

I'm not VAT registered and don't want to be so its easier for me to let the customer buy the main items. My quote is for labour and sundries like cable clips junction boxes etc. And I'll give an indicative price based on an estimated amount of time on the job plus the sundries. Sometimes it goes...

    Ltd Company - Van Maintenance

Maybe best to see what the accountant has to say. Is the Ltd company buying the van or are you just donating it?

Domestic Electrical Issue - Live Volts in House but Not Getting Shocks. Any Help Appreciated

I do hate it when people call them plug sockets. They are either plugs or sockets but never both.

Hard wired smoke and heat detectors.

I'd find a new electrician. He's incorrect that its mandatory and if he's wrong there were else may he be wrong. If he'd said he'd only do the job if they are included because that's his choice fair enough. But to mislead or be mistaken is different.

Hard wired smoke and heat detectors.

There is no legal requirement to have any fire or heat detectors in a normal domestic residence unless it is required due to building regs (ie has a loft conversion) It is however sensible to do so. Most folks go with normal battery powered non linked alarms but a wired linked (or RC) system...

Stroma Certification Scheme Stroma Worry - Don't bother, they're sound and normal and not just after you for your money!

Yes I passed mine a few weeks back. Assessment was straight forward and all went well.

    FCU for Extractor fan

Here's an idea. What about a 3A fuse in the neutral? How many regs would that break.

    Small joint box

That's right they are push fit so only works with solid cores. Mine where both solid but what was nice was they had a small and a larger hole so mismatched gauge could be used.

    FCU for Extractor fan

The fan is a humidistat fan and very quiet. So no real issue with it coming on with the light. An outside switch isn't always the most convenient if you discover a need for sudden ventilation...

    FCU for Extractor fan

Well of course the MCB would (or RCBO in this case) So what's the point? Aren't we adding more elements into the equation?

    FCU for Extractor fan

The fuse element in the combined unit is internal separate so the fuse still only covers L or SL not both. Having read the instructions with Fan no fuse is mentiined only a dual pole isolator. And that should be a 3 pole for my unit. I like the idea of fusing the whole bathroom circuit but then...

    Measuring Power Draw

And to be sure. turn off the battery charger and check no current is flowing. If any is its leakage (or an unknown load) But based on your results that's 373Watts per day. So divide by 24 and that's 15 watts per hr. I'd guess that's about right for a battery charger.

    Small joint box

I've used these recently. ELECTRICAL JUNCTION BOX 2A-24A/240V 3/4 POLE TERMINAL BLOCK INLINE WIRE CHOC BOX | eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162328227094?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=461344167787&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Worked ok.

    FCU for Extractor fan

Adding an extractor fan off of a 6A lighting circuit. Installation instructions specify a local isolator (as I would anyway) so 3 pole isolator will be used. Switching L SL and N however should I have an FCU upstream of the live? It would be 6A fused as specified which seems pointless the RCBO...

Link between L1 on different one way light switches

I hate lighting circuits when you have to unpick what's happening. Had on the other day with an unused live in a ceiling rose. Turns out the live had been linked across in a 2 gang switch so wasn't needed in the feed to the light but the neutral was.

    Anybody got one of these

I've used something similar for years. It should have no effect on the operation of the phone. Its no different to having the phone on the normal charger.
