Female Graduate Retraining As An Electrician. Help/Advice.

I know what you mean, there a lot of successful people don't have degrees, and also a lot of people holding degrees without success. For me, I'm not necessarily looking for wealth and recognition in the industry, but rather a high-level of knowledge to be the best I can be, perhaps retiring into...

Which cable rod set to buy

Respectfully Static Zap, this isn't my quote, rather a quote I replied to. I think the quote-function malfunctioned for some reason which I'm happy to edit if pointed-out. Also, never-mind burning yourself on the chuck! After I drilling repeatedly through red-brick, I accidentally touched the...

    Money grabbing training centre

I studied the 2365 level 2 & 3 course at Trade Skills 4 U which cost £7500 plus. In all honesty the training was fantastic! They had incredibly knowledgeable tutors who where willing to help everyone and explained things well in good time, even going the extra mile to stay after-hours when...

With duplicate paperwork which copy do you keep.

I've always used a computer to generate the documents, this way you can produce unlimited copies. I can't see why it matters when giving it to the client, the information is identical regardless of which copy they receive. Maybe give the competency-scheme a call to check?

AVI (Approved Voltage Indicator) - Common Misconceptions

Hi Guys! I've worked with a few qualified-electricians recently and I'm shocked with the large-scale misconceptions regarding the proper safe-isolation procedure, particularly concerning the function of an AVI (Approved Voltage Indicator). During the last few weeks I've met several domestic...

Female Graduate Retraining As An Electrician. Help/Advice.

Firstly (from the title) it makes no difference if your male / female in the industry, you're clearly passionate and that's all that matters! If anyone suggests otherwise, they're honestly not worth your expertise. Congratulations on your degree too by the way! That's an incredible achievement...

    Electrician Book recommendations

To be fair, I'm happy that the regulations change often. Technology evolves rapidly & constantly, and old systems become outdated & irrelevant. It's awesome that the regulations keep up-to-date with current systems, to ensure people are safe while also recognising/encouraging advancements within...

    Am2 safe isolation advice

Completely agree with you Spinlondon! Checking the functionality of the AVE is often forgotten, while extremely important. The "10 steps" I mentioned only refer to the number of conductor-combinations tested, rather than every step taken during a proper safe-isolation procedure. It's a great...

CK Automatic or Irwin Vise Grip Wire Strippers?

I personally recommend the CK strippers. They are great quality and very reliable, working from 6mm CSA down to 1mm CSA perfectly.

    Electrician Book recommendations

During my 2365 course, I bought the following books which all came-in useful at some point: - The City & Guilds Textbook (Level 2) Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings & Structures) 2013 - City & Guilds Textbook (Level 3) Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings & Structures)...

Which cable rod set to buy

My best advice - buy a cheap set of 1m rods! Regardless of how much you pay for your rods, they will all wear-out and/or snap eventually. This set is under £10 and has worked fantastically, I've actually bought two sets myself! Also, 1m rods are the best length, they are easy to carry around...

Just saying hello and introducing myself.

Bonjour et bienvenue me2! Just to be sure (from your initial post) I'm presuming that you're originally from France and moved to the UK? I personally can't see a problem with you becoming a member of a competency scheme. All competency schemes will test you to make sure that you're a...

    GU10 LED Spotlights fading

To be fair, I'm really happy with the moderators on this forum. I've been on other forums (*cough* Arduino forum *cough*) and did my best to help others out with their projects and questions with plenty of information, only to discover that my posts where deleted and re-posted under an admin's...

    Am2 safe isolation advice

I'm intrigued Spinlondon, what does the 12 step involve? I'm always responsive to suggestions which improve health & safety in addition to the standard practices. This was the way I was personally taught in college, the 10 steps only apply to the combination of the conductors (E-N, E-L1, E-L2...

Newbie here looking to go it alone

Welcome to the forum Matt! I started up alone straight after qualifying due to the lack of work in normal employment, honestly it's tough out there! I was very lucky to have a friend who was an established self-employed electrician. I was sub-contracted by him during his larger jobs, and he'd...

Properties manager need advice from time to time

Welcome to the forum Stewart! I'm formerly an estate-agent down in the South-East and currently an electrician after a career change. I made the career change because every-other successful agent I met was (no offence) a shark who looked for the most vulnerable - something I couldn't do. I just...

    GU10 LED Spotlights fading

LED lamps shouldn't "pop" (suddenly stop working) compared with other types of lamps, instead they usually fade over time and their life is heavily influenced by temperature. DigiKey states "The temperature to which the LED is subjected is a primary contributor to the rate of dislocation...

    Am2 safe isolation advice

With 10 steps, I'm presuming it's a three-phase board? I'll go through the steps I'd take to provide some food for thought: Identify the circuit you will be working on and which corresponding isolator it represents. (In this case however, I'll presume they have asked for the whole board to be...
