Thanks for reply. The cable is circular

Thanks for getting back so quickly. I attach another image. My sparky is coming back tomorrow to hook up the CU

I'm not sure whether its MICC but I attach an image of what they've run to my hut. None of the cable is exposed to the elements.

Thanks again. As I've said, I'm not qualified so what alternative to an MCB would there be bearing in mind a 10 way dual RCD Hager board has just been fitted by my electrician

    No RCD in sub main

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I didn't mention that in my OP. It is 4mm MICC. I found this bit of the chart online..........4mm - 40amps method 1, 42amps method 11

Thanks for taking the time to reply. After studying a bit more I can see what you mean. We have Ib = 18A, In = 40A and Iz = 37A. We need to have Ib<=In<=Iz so these numbers fail. Should have used 32A MCB - am I correct?

Thanks for the prompt reply. Potting shed......I have great plans :) 1573169528 Wow, that was quick and thanks for the prompt responses. I agree that the 4mm cable (rated at 37A) is overkill. By my calculations on a load of say 4KW gives approx 18A and since there is little need to allow for...

    No RCD in sub main

Hi, as I've said I'm not an electrician but studying C&G in my own time and have worked as a mate. I've just had a qualified sparky upgrade my CU to a split board 10 way dual RCD. He has run a 4mm2 cable (from a 40A MCB protected by one of the RCDs) to my hut and will be coming back to wire up...

Insulation resistance with broken line conductor

Thank you all for taking the time to help.

Insulation resistance with broken line conductor

Thanks for all your responses, they all make sense. What I couldn't get was that in a lot of the fault finding videos I watch, they use IR as a tool to find the problem. Testing for continuity first would show this circuit had a break and an IR test would be of little use until the conductor...

Insulation resistance with broken line conductor

HI...just noticed I've made the break in the Neutral conductor

Insulation resistance with broken line conductor

Hi, I'm not an electrician but I'm studying the material required for the C&G 2394/5 just for the sake of it. I think I understand the theory behind insulation resistance testing (but maybe not!) and the reason the test is performed at 500V (insulation condition, fault finding) and that loads...

    Volt stick gives "false" reading

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I isolated the MCB at the CU and tested for isolation at the ceiling rose (L/N, L/cpc, N/cpc) so no, I didn't test for polarity at the ceiling rose.

    Volt stick gives "false" reading

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I did test between L/N, L/E and N/CPC and got the expected results. I'll need to think this through.

    Volt stick gives "false" reading

Thanks for your replies. I understand what safe isolation is and voltsticks are only an indication and never to be used to assume circuit is dead. As I said I used a Fluke T150 to test the circuit was actually safe to work on.

    Volt stick gives "false" reading

I'm not an electrician but have worked as a mate and know my limitations. To fit a new light in a bedroom (loop at ceiling rose), I isolated the supply at the CU and tested supply at ceiling rose with Fluke T150, obviously no voltage detected between L and N or L and CPC (safe isolation - near...

    Dropping cables from loft

Thanks for all your replies. The lighting circuit is protected by an RCBO 1569403107 I agree...there's no such thing as a "5 minute job"

    Dropping cables from loft

Hi, I'm retired, but have worked as an electricians mate off and on - I know my limitations. I've been asked by a friend to fit a "picture light". The wall is plasterboard cavity with insulation, the wall has a 3 inch coving. I have access to the loft above and there is a single pendant in the...

    Zs and temperature correction

Hi, as an aspiring sparky I'm needing help with the temperature adjustment formula for Zs. I'm using GN3 (17th). I understand that the values given in Appendix A - Table A4 (for BS 60898) are assumed at a test ambient of 10C whereas the values in BS7671 are at the "normal operating temperature"...

    De-rating a ring circuit

Hi, I'm not an electrician but have worked as a mate and I'm studying in my own time - I know my limitations. I watch a lot of videos (John Ward and others) and have come across an issue I don't understand. An 80A 30mA RCCD has 4 Type B 32A MCBs hanging off it and the sparky () talks about...
