    Broken 13A Switch Fused Isolator?

Tel, The homeowners didn't know this controlled the power to the washing machine and dryer socket and obviously didn't use it much. So. it may mean that the contacts are stuck. Replaced with MK Fused Isolator and all works okay. Kept the broken Click Isolator and will test at home to see if I...

    Broken 13A Switch Fused Isolator?

Whilst checking for a tripping RCD I found that a 13A Switch Fused Isolator, for a double socket behind a washing machine and a dryer, was giving various voltage readings when in off position, 240v when on and stayed at 240v when switched off. This video shows the problem...

    Hairdryer in Bathroom

Thanks for this link. The last paragraph says: "Never bring mains-powered portable appliances such as hairdryers, heaters or radios into a bathroom. You could be severely injured or killed." I'll fit the socket and pass the link onto the customer, so she knows there is a risk. The rewire...

    Hairdryer in Bathroom

A client has asked me to install a socket just outside the bathroom door so she can use her hairdryer in the bathroom. Bathroom is only about 2 x 2 meters. Does this breach the Regulations? There is no bath, just a shower, so likely to be steamy. What course of action do members advise?

    Fibreglass or Aluminium Stepladders?

I am about to invest in some new stepladders. I was thinking of getting Youngman fibreglass stepladders but have been told they are not as stable as aluminium. Also, are they really much safer for domestic electrical work? Aluminium stepladders have rubber insulated feet, which should give...

    Can't find Lighting Transformer

It probably is being held by clipped T&E although the transformer I removed has two screws for fixing to a joist. If, as seems likely, the lost transformer is the same type there is the possibility it has been fixed. I think I will take the supply from the point it was attached to the...

    Can't find Lighting Transformer

Just been on a "simple" job, changing 8 50w MR16 halogen downlights to (customer supplied) IKEA LED's (£3 each!). Pulled out the 150W transformer that supplied the first set of 4 and changed these. The other transformer must be fixed into the ceiling void. I can't feel it and the void is full of...

RCD a but slow. Time for a change?

Does this help? No. I always say to customers "Can I assume that you test the RCD's every three months?" They look at me as if they have broken the law! Does anyone ever check the RCD? I only ever do it when someone pays me!

RCD a but slow. Time for a change?

I tested a customers BS4293 MEM 100A, 30mA RCD, which is about 25 years old, after it tripped overnight. The trip time at x 1 was 207.2, 78 and 54.2 ms at 0 deg. and 68.6 ms at 180 deg. I know that the limit is 200 ms, so one reading was slightly over, which is why I repeated the test. At x 5 it...

Isolation Switches for New Consumer Unit

I ask customers to get their electricity supplier to fit an isolation switch so that I can safely isolate the supply while I fit a new consumer unit. This must be a common request but my customers usually recieive a response as if no one has ever before asked for one. This is part of an email...
