Qualifications challenged at MCS Renewal ?

If only the inspectors actually showed some interest in my practical competence rather than wasting my time with a sodding QMS document then the industry would be in a better state and I wouldn't have to waste my time travelling around the country listening to people tell me things I already know.

Qualifications challenged at MCS Renewal ?

Got this back from the NICEIC today: "Hope you are well I have been asked to contact you regarding your PV Qualification The experience worker route hasn't started yet but you can register an interest. I have been advised this route will cost in the region of £500. There is another way you...

I need a green energy expert as a moderator

I'd be happy to do it if nobody else does, but I'm not online as much as I used to be.

Starting out again - What would you do differently?

+1 to the maintenance route. Vast majority of our PV work is now repair - which generally means replacing an inverter of course.

meter for Solar PV System melting. What's the problem?

No need to isolate in the loft. Turning off the AC will be enough for now.

Who Are Our Resident Green Energy / Solar Experts?

This is the quoted NCR: "2 1 MCS 001 (17) C. Hammond`s SPV certificate expired Jan 2016, evidence of competency needed. Agreed corrective action Company to evidence via email" Has no one else been asked to do this? I'm really ----ed off with it.

meter for Solar PV System melting. What's the problem?

Sounds like a loose connection. You need to get the original installer out to sort it. If there is enough damage then the meter will need changing. If this happens then you'll need to liaise with your FIT provider as well as your installer.

Who Are Our Resident Green Energy / Solar Experts?

We did challenge it. They simply quoted the MCS requirement at me and it was basically liked it or leave it. We seriously flirted with the idea of leave it. Wouldn't it be good if our MCS visit spent more time on site like or NICEIC inspector does so I can actually demonstrate that I know...

Who Are Our Resident Green Energy / Solar Experts?

I like to think I'm an expert in PV. Although that hasn't stopped the MCS demanding I spend £300 on a refresher course to prove it.....

Strange test results - advice requested

Readings over the whole site seem to have improved slightly, although it is difficult to tell. I'm convinced that it isn't moisture - everywhere is so dry and most circuits are testing perfect.

Strange test results - advice requested

Hi fellas. No junction boxes nor mice attacks. We actually isolated one of the faults to a bathroom lighting circuit. Just four spots from a switch, no leds. We seemed to be able to affect the reading by moving the cable. The cable was free enough to pull a replacement cable through - which...

That was my first thought. But I checked with another tester and the results were identical.

Strange test results - advice requested

We don't have any cable left from the original delivery, but we do have cable drums from further deliveries. They all test totally clear. I have thought about faulty cable, and it still seems the most likely explanation to me, but we are getting faults on the 1.0mm and the 2.5mm. Not...

Strange test results - advice requested

Okay, I've got a pretty unusual problem that I've had over the last couple of days and I'd welcome some advice on this. Currently we are carrying out electrical works on barn conversions into single and two bed homes. Fairly small, single storey. Carried out second fix - sockets, lights...

    MCS inspection

Just had ours and we've had a couple of things highlighted. First of all, I need to refresher training. No idea why this should be. I do the job every day so I can't see why I need to pay out more money and lose another day. If I can't do my job properly, then surely this would show up...

Inverter replacements by manufacturer - invalidate warranty?

That's not good. We've been having huge issues with SMA. Will never used them again and will advise all future customers how poor their customer service is.

Inverter replacements by manufacturer - invalidate warranty?

I've noticed some manufacturers are replacing inverters themselves rather than sending the inverter to the installer. I wonder whether this could void the warranty for some firms?

    Cut Solar PV cable

10 mins work. As TJ says, I'd join it with some MC4 connectors and carry out a couple of tests at the DC isolator. Job done. If you were local, I'd come and sort it. Ring some local PV firms and get a price.

PV+ - anybody heard of this?

I've not heard of this before. What is it? And are we talking about overvoltage on the DC or AC side? If it's the DC side then the system hasn't been designed correctly. If it's the AC side then you should look at getting the DNO to reduce the voltage. "generating 20% more registered...
