    Advice for a bill/dispute

The way the cable enters the mains board it has made it no longer comply with IP4X. The rcd spur should have been fitted closer to cover the hole or a trunking fitted. I agree with the advise given so far that a quote would have saved a lot of grief. Certificate for the works is essential and...

    Most reliable RCD brand.

We often use the ProElec ones from CPC which are about 10.50 ish when they are on a deal, not sure how much normally but would expect it to be under 15. We have used these for many years now and regularly stock our stores about 50 at a time and same amount of MCB's and we restock every couple of...

    Just under 50kW

You need to contact the DNO anyway under G59, they will let you know if you can connect at the tranny, they usually have fuse outputs anyway and you can fit a board and metering there although you are going to miss out on the house using some of the supplied energy, this alone might make it...

    Hall of Shame Photos

This is a light fitting that I came across that had been recently fitted by 'an electrician friend'....... Notice the blue sleeving on the switched live, the connector blocks that are not rated for the temparature, the 'green only' sleeving to the cpc's. but best of all the way they didn't...

This is the fault I traced following a kitchen installation by a general kitchen fitter....... luckily i had a cable tracer on me that day and the house had an RCD, even one for the whole house. Guy had told the customer that it would stop tripping out when the wall dried out !!!! Then I...

    flickering lights

Hi Markiesparky, we work on a lot of commercial property in London and when they have had large supply upgrades they have taken the opportunity to reduce the voltage for economic reasons. The results have been that they save energy and prolong the life of modern equipment built to run on 230V...

Lutron Dimmer Modules. Fault on outside lighting.

Lutron usually state that you should use 2.5mm cable as a minimum, but this shouldn't cause it to fault. Have you tested the circuit are clear and have you tried the circuit without using the dimmer and just switch the load?

    50 Amp Cooker switch

We all know they should be able to, but I wouldn 't want to be responsible for it going Squiffy. The cooker has a gas and electric feed to it and the designers are looking for it to have a 50-Amp isolator as they are reading the manufacturers gumph, so no point going up against them to save a...

    flickering lights

probably right, may be a voltage drop due to the surge from the compressor although usually neighbours are on different phases, unless it is all three phase. May be partly caused by old fluorescents rated at 240V and supply voltage now been dropped to 230V, could be a job there waiting for you...

    50 Amp Cooker switch

Yep the manufacturer says - MUST be a 50-Aamp isolator - therefore it MUST be a 50-Amp isolator. It doesn't matter what calcs you do, you cant supercede a direct instruction from the people who make the kit.

    50 Amp Cooker switch

If you read the blurb on the cooker you wouldn't even chance it, it clearly states that it MUST have a 50-Amp isolator.............. besides I dont want to spoil our unblemished public liability
