I do not worry about the light goes off due to time-out. My wife always hang around when I go in the attic, she can reset the timer every 30 min. On top of that, I have a head lamp (+ one extra), the power is mainly for other things (hand held vac, drill, etc..), the cordless version of these...
I have plan to fix this issue and at the same time add a ceiling light controlled by this same switch.
First, I will replace the switch outlet with a normal outlet and connect the wires of the active line to the cable that goes to the switch, at the switch box, this cable is now the active line...
I checked outlets and switches in my home to ensure all are wired correctly. I just discovered another outlet with neutral connected to ground.
I believe this outlet was added on, and did not exist when the home was built 40 years ago.
Here is the wiring diagram without this add-on outlet. This...
I could also replace the circuit breaker dedicated for the dish washer and the D disposal to be 20A GFCI circuit breaker. I am familiar with the main panel work.
I will have to do the same for the counter top outlets in the kitchen, an GFCI breaker is simpler to replace.
Last year, I did crawl...
I like to be able to connect an electrical tool such as small vacuum cleaner to clean things on the attic or a light.
For convenience, I like to plug one end of this cord to an outlet on the ground level, then let it run straight up to a small hole on the ceiling to the attic. So, only a few...
Megawatt, thanks for very clear answer. I never knew that the label UL on any electrical product means "safe to use". Make a lot of sense to me. My electric heaters do have that UL on the label.
The more I learned about home electricity, the more paranoid I become about outlets in my home.
First, in my 40+ yrs old home, ALL outlets are 9 inch above the floor surface (measured from the floor to the lowest edge of the outlet), including garage outlets. I just learned that NEC requires 12...
I recently learned the importance of electrical grounding and checked all appliances in my home.
Toaster, Microwave oven have 3 prong power cord, so their metal casing would not cause any shock if the device has worn out connection inside. Some others like fans on the floor have only 2 prong and...
This outlet has no neutral wire going into it. In principle it should not even be there.
I recently why connecting neutral to ground in and outlet is a very bad thing to do.
So I remove the receptacle, cap out the wires with wire nut (even they have been disconnected from the source), and put a...
Oh, I just remembered one more scenario and this could work for you.
There is a case where there are 4 wires like these going into a receptacle outlet.
The black is connected to the top HOT terminal, and the red is connected to the bottom terminal. The black is always HOT and the RED is only...
I don't know whether you are in US or other countries. In US, The ground wire (green) is simply bare copper, And when there are ground, white, black, red there, most likely it was meant for a 3-way switch. And this set of wires work together with another 3-way switch to control a single light...
First you need to be sure that your LEDs are dimmable, from the specifications. If you do not have this info, then it is hard to find a compatible dimmer switch.
That was what I did when installing LED recessed lights in my kitchen, and LEDs for my chandelier. The two dimmer switches I bought...
Hi Lucian,
I totally agree with you on this outlet that has no neutral.
Connecting neutral to ground is only done at the main panel, and not allowed in any other place.
I will remove the receptacle and put a blank cover on this outlet. The ROMEX cable from the switch box above to this outlet...
Look like this outlet cannot be made working without violating NEC code.
I will remove the receptacle, cut off both ends of the ROMEX cable and put in the blank cover.
This way, it is out of sight and... out of mind.
There are two outlets nearby, on both sides but not the same wall !!!
Well, the light J-box is pretty far from the switch, all cables are inside the walls. There is no practical way for me as a DIY to add neutral to his whole thing. The wiring is original in this 40 yrs old home.
