My tu'penny worth having done this for a few years before leaving London.
I commuted by tube, pre-covid, with various trolleys and bag options to carry drill drivers and hand tools. It was do-able (bus to train to tube and walk) but back breaking and I always missed something I needed. Maybe...
Check-A-Trade appear to be consistent..consistently annoying every trade and service paying client since since Homeserve bought that golden goose and cooked it. Spoken to so many trades from sparks to locksmiths, plumbers and painters who have found better, cheaper alternatives. Tried the budget...
Found out something useful today. Although an employer is supposed to supply a tax statement under CIS most don't and none of mine ever have. I've always had to request it at the end of the year. Found out that HMRC will supply one (by post) if requested and if you have any dodgy non-payers in...
I had a SWB Caddy on loan for a week. I know they are hugely popular; especially the ex-BG ones in blue. The one I had didn't really suit me. Very basic cab unless spec'ed up by the original new-buyer but fast and low. That's compared to my normal Nissan NV200, so the Caddy's rack was easy to...
Our local authority operate a trade scheme through their trading standards office. It came highly recommended but, when I looked into it, the outrageous fees were only a few hundred short of Check a Trade's "think of a number" pricing strategy. To add insult to injury; they then added a "Covid...
Currently locked into an endless Small Claims Court procedure and expecting to win but not get actually paid. He'll go bankrupt and start again...and again so this might be interesting.
Since folk were encouraging enough to answer my original query it all helped. Took a lot of searching to find a place but we moved to Poole and it's wonderful. We'll get our beaches back in the autumn (better wind surfing) and there appears to be less of the unqualified race-to-the-bottom with...
I've used them since 17th Ed. To me, non-combustible material includes the grommets. Granted the MCB, etc are plastic bodied but as any fire will go up, the FRG's make sense.
An interesting grommets question...hold the front page.
Wondered if anyone knew a supplier of the white fire retardant grommets normally used to seal a CCU at the point of cable entry?
Wylex and BG make pre-packed kits, somewhat over priced for what they are but they sort-of do the job...
Well, we made it.
Started this thread a long time ago and...we made it.
A late thank you to everyone who contributed and encouraged. The move to Dorset has been amazing and, as others have said, there is work available. You have to go to some effort but the clients pay on time. That's a big...
Speaking personally; I learnt more about fault finding a really difficult & and multi-layered issue from members of this forum than from the 2391-52. Still worth doing the C&G but it could be much better. The core text is little better than a basic guide.
This has not been resolved and I expect to face the debtor in court in later this year. Even so, this is where I've changed the way I work. Just a couple of pointers that might help others.
1) Start every single interaction with a client on the basis that you might end up in dispute. No texts...
The short answer is; You can with successful test by and membership of a Part P organisation. There might be arguments for taking the 2391 but it's not a requirement. Part P is. Many hold the view that the Part P organisation's test are "make the tea and pay the fee". That was not my...
THAT'S INTERESTING! I hadn't realised that if you monitor the readings and they remain the same it isn't necessary to fork out anything between £50 - £125 every year for a calibration test. Thanks Midwest.
That KT65 was one of the few I considered before pitching for a lightly used Megger 1730. Looks nice and fool-proof compared to the Mettrel and Fluke Had a Fluke on loan recently. Can't say much about the accuracy, which should the the most important consideration, but find the 1730's...
The bag of hand tools you build up will be more valuable and less easily replaced than the headline pieces such as battery drills. This is one, simple lightweight piece I would not second fix without C.K Re-threading Tool M3.5 x 0.6mm -...
Sweary-free gospel from DS and spot on. How on earth can the most sugar'n'caffine soaked code monkey writing a portal page expect a realistic quote from job descriptions like "fit a socket" or "lights don't work"! Just asking a painter to paint the fron of my house while sober needed a...
In my early days I tried My Builder and Rated People. You have got to start SOMEWHERE to build the fabled word-of-mouth that everyone talks about. Both were a poor return. Race to the bottom prices and on occasions, I'd call a client, having paid for the contact, and discover the job wasn't...
A classic - thanks Pete :)
As expected, my claim has been challenged. Won't say too much in open forum but I am up against a practised debtor / bankrupt so taking nothing for granted and seeking advice on how to present myself / my case. Solicitor is an expensive option. I will bullet point...
