    Knipex SmartGrip self-locking pliers

I bought a pair of these a couple of years ago after I saw them demonstrated at an exhibition. They've been languishing unused in the workshop ever since.... until today, when I was surprised to find that they do not "lock" in any reasonable sense of the word that I understand - despite what I...

Excellent advice, thank you. A very helpful and comprehensive response.

Opinions on the best diamond discs for cutting concrete

It sounds like this might be worth a try. Worst case is that I start here and work my way up to Marcrist. A couple of years ago I had to drill endless 22mm holes in brickwork and this is the experience that set me wondering just how much better the more expensive diamond cutters really were.

Opinions on the best diamond discs for cutting concrete

I need to cut several tens of metres of 100mm x 100mm channels in hard (it's a C40 mix) concrete. Some of these channels will be for electrical services, some for other services (mainly MDPE water pipes) and some cuts will simply be to assist in tidying up a bit of a scruffy concrete pour. I...

    Issue with cat 6 connection

It's about the potential for damage to the cable. There is nothing wrong with an exposed cable per se, although I would be cautious about running one where it was exposed to UV from the sun on a long term basis. It is easy to damage a data cable by using inappropriate cable clips. In...

2 x Ovens and a hob - can anyone help?

14.5KW on a 45A OCPD? Diversity is one thing, but surely there must be a (considerably) greater than zero chance of everything being turned on all at once from time to time? One only has to imagine Christmas dinner with a few of the relis to see how. Even though the oven with the bird and...

Tools stolen and ways of tracing them back...!!!

Isn't the problem with SmartWater that they require an annual subscription? I've looked into it in the past but always been put off by this.

    Fault on kitchen ring

That IS tidy compared to many I've seen! :)

    Toughest screwdriver bits

I have been having fair success with DART bits of late. I do find that, as with TCT masonry bits, if you allow any "chatter" between the bit and the screw then bit life is significantly shortened regardless of which brand is used.

Advice after drilling through electrical cable above plug socket

One (standard) hamster is approximately 0.000237Ap (where Ap is of course the usual unit and abbreviation for 'apprentice'). So, by simple arithmetic, we can deduce that we need 4,213 hamsters to replace the pulling power of one apprentice. Although it is inconvenient to provide facilities to...

    Peoples thoughts Rcd protection

Except, of course, that the real problem is not the occasional internetter / "stalker" curiously peeking into profiles one at a time but the mass data loss experienced by web sites when they are hacked and the details of everybody stolen en masse. In that scenario having a profile that is...

    Re Wire of 1960 flat

At first I thought this must be an April 1st type windup - a KW or more without a wired connection and without injuring people - but no, this really seems to be a real thing. Or a real company at least... I'm still wondering whether this is going to turn out to be another cold fusion...

Interesting. A construction guy I know made pretty well the same comment, word for word, to me only yesterday.

Socket ring circuit 6mm to 2.5mm - interesting!

Well that certainly WOULD be likely to kill any computer unfortunate enough to be powered up at the time on the circuit concerned.

MCB, RCD & AFDD all in one

Ah, yes. Good point. Obvious when one gives it the merest moment of thought.

Can anybody throw any further light on this? It seems a crazy limitation.

The use of plastic wall plugs for the 18th....

Surely the point is that falling wiring does not merely impede one's progress in the same way as other falling stuff (such as suspended ceilings) but also has the interesting additional potential ('scuse pun) to administer a seriously painful and possibly life threatening jolt at the same time?
