    Should Scottish Government delay new smoke detector law

    Handyman local to me has been going round doing smoke alarms - he can't seem to manage changing just the slide on Aico head or the plug in Kidde head, so he removes them and fits none interlinked standalone battery alarms.

    I don't know when they changed to them but the Aico bases have been the same for many years now, I've replaced a lot of expired detectors and reused the same base. Flip side will be if it's had a bit of bad paintwork, smokers or anything it'll be hard to justify leaving a not pleasant looking...

    Envirovent Silent S100T is the quietest I've used lately, but nearly sure the Manrose continuous running fan is quieter - even in boost mode. But it's been a while since I installed one so can't quite remember what it was like in boost noise wise.

    All domestic smoke alarms have a lifespan of 10 years. Probably best to stick an Aico in that has the integrated battery so no one needs to go near it for the next 10 years or so.

    Rf thermostat recommendations

    EPH Combi Pack 4 (CP4). Fitted loads for the 2 gas installers I work for, very few problems and straight forward to operate especially in comparison to what some of them are like, and has a Boost function which most don't have.

    @ashbarker96 are you VAT registered? Those 4 houses would probably push you close to the VAT threshold, and newbuilds are 0% VAT rated, so would probably need to be VAT registered to have a chance of getting them.

    Why limit that to the 60's? Could easily apply to late 80's and early 90's and well beyond. With modern builds it seems spec is low to hit for extra's left right and centre. Was on one today, 4 bed done around 2012, master bedroom and the big bedrooms 2 double sockets per room, small bedroom...

    Blocking diode for radiator pump?

    I'm struggling to follow this one...is there a pump for the HW as well? Or is the pump solely for CH and HW is on gravity? A diode won't work as it's an AC supply. A relay might but changing what sounds like a pumped system to a gravity one sounds like trouble

    I'd worry about what state the rest of it is in if this is what it's like on the bit you can see - if able to repair that part with a proper joint I'd be noted on cert that rest of the cable is nothing to do with me.

    What do you say when you've quoted and the customer says; "that sounds like a lot?"

    Never ever ever lower the quote for the job unless the works are reduced. And don't do it for less for "cash", or if customer suggests them supplying materials or doing the less skilled parts like chasing walls - it's not going to end well.
