EICR - Shallow Back Box Depth a Fault?

If the cables are crushed and risk becoming damaged then yes, but it is very unlikely to be pointed out or checked and if the cabling is positioned in a way where it is not crushed it’ll be fine.

Can you fit a switch without a backbox

The earth wire used as a live needs changed immediately, not in time.

    Switchgear Brand Identification

Great effort, very handy document. Some of these I’ve never even heard of

Light switch controls both hallway and living room

The light switch wouldn’t necessarily fail an inspection, it’s just not ideal having to switch your lights on from the hall. As for the extension lead, if it’s plugged into a socket in a wardrobe it would not be considered hardwired and therefore wouldn’t fall under the electrical inspection, it...

Trade Skills 4 U waste of time?

I can’t really see the point in doing a level 2 course as the level 2 is done as part of the full apprenticeship on the way to level 3.

Second Opinion on Modification to Existing Circuit

None of these options would be viable and I wouldn’t go ahead with them. As above, if there is no time to do it right then don’t do it at all.

Dodgy trade pictures for your amusement! - 1 Million Views!

The most generic sticker in history. Need to get myself some of these to cover all situations.

Need A Guide Price For A Project Please

1750 was a good price. I wouldn’t do it for 1450. I tend not to negotiate, I value my time too highly.

Exposing old mains cables, Is this safe???

I cannot believe they have asked you to do this. Removing the pitch on a live cable is extremely dangerous and should not be undertaken by any untrained person. It’s time to contact the hse with details of who from the dno has asked and approved you to do this.

Adding a Fuse Spur on to a Consumer Unit Circuit

On a radial circuit it doesn’t really make any difference. On a ring the second spur must be from the load side of the first fcu

Adding a Fuse Spur on to a Consumer Unit Circuit

Sounds like a spur from a spur to me? Should be from the load side of the original spur if it’s a ring

    Type of drill to get?

I would recommend Milwaukee. I’ve only had good experiences with their tools and tend not to vary because they are the batteries I have. M12 range and m18 range are both great, m18 being considerably more powerful but larger and heavier.

    Mis-use of tools

A very valid question. I always appreciate when people take an interest in how things work.

Vir cabling allowed for fuseboard change ??

It really should be replaced. Connecting it is taking a risk as you won’t be able to visually inspect 100% of the cable in most cases. Personally I would not reconnect and if client was objecting I’d prefer to walk away.

What does the main fuse protect?

10mm concentric in our house and most of the surrounding area. Always found it interesting that the tails are bigger than the incoming cable.

Vir cabling allowed for fuseboard change ??

But what are your IR results on this VIR cable? That’s really the main issue, you can’t sign anything off unless you have done your testing.

Vir cabling allowed for fuseboard change ??

Strangely I have a 3 metre length under my stairs from when the house was rewired (buckle clips were too good quality to remove) and it’s in perfect condition. Other end of the same cable was completely falling apart.

What's the point of DIN rail terminal blocks?

This is how we learn. It’s amazing how long you can do the job and not discover a certain item because you only do a certain type of work.
