    If you go creating an earth on all outlets and appliances you better make sure the main neutral is earthed , or you will create your own personal "death trap"

    6mm should be fine if the pump is drawing the same power as it is rated at.

    Garage RCD conundrum.

    You will fix the problem on the board... but you are still leaving the low reading on the walls, thus making a potentially dangerous situation between the wiring and the garage walls. If the board is properly earthed your problem will return on the board.

    Unconventional light wiring

    Looks like there was no active where they got the neutral and earth from, so they had to run a SDI active from another outlet. The red wire in the connector should be dead.

    They have either replaced a fire detector with the light fitting, or there is a switch somewhere. You can see the cable under the render in the ceiling, see if you can trace it out.

    When did neutral at the light switch become standard practice?

    Electricians started running active, neutral and earth to the switches when Plate switches became popular. Before that we used architrave switches and you cant fit all those wires behind the architrave. It is easier to only run a single cable to the light fitting when you are usually working off...
