    Tax and test sheets checked?

A few years ago I got a £5 tip from a customer and forgot to declare it. I am always worried when there's a knock at the door in case the HMRC found out and have informed the National Crime Agency.

    Costings for work etc

Agree that's it underpriced, especially £20 for the 2nd and subsequent hours. If it's a 5 hour job it's unlikely that you will get anymore work that day. All your overheads (including tax/NI), time and fuel travelling to/from the job you will be lucky to clear £85 out of the £130 cheque the...

Starting to become self employed (own)

I disagree regards turning up in an estate doesn't look good. I only do domestic work and haven't had a van for many years, and I don't think it matters at all to the customers whether you turn up in a van or an estate car. What's more important is how reliable you are, how...

    First Job estimate price check

I agree that making good is important as the vast majority of sparks do this so you would lose a lot of work if you don't. I also agree that you are under charging, but in fairness we probably all did the same in the early days.

    Wifi controlled FCU suggestions

Thanks for the info. The heaters are already on FCUs, but I'm replacing the consumer units and the customer wants the heaters taken off the economy 7 meter and to have them on timers so they can have them on during the day when they want (no central heating in the property). Thanks again

    Wifi controlled FCU suggestions

A customer has a couple of storage heaters on an economy meter and wants to be able to control both (seperate timer FCUs for each heater). They ideally want wifi controlled FCUs, but there isn't much on the market and the reviews aren't great (I usually use timeguard standard timer FCUs). Any...

    Competent person scheme

It's a bit like politics, you will get different views. I was with the NICEIC and went to stroma and I wasn't impressed with the assessor or the support from Stroma as they were so disorganised, so I'm back with the NICEIC who I've never had any issues with. Soon some will come along who will...

    Quinetic Switches/Dimmers

With regards quinetic switches, I read you can add up to 10 switches on each device, but I'm assuming that if you use the wall switches as 2 way switches they will work regardless of what direction they are switched. My point is I haven't seen any quinetic switches that are 2 way?

Minor works - Like for like

I don't think he was being serious about using a non rcd socket for a lawmower.

Minor works - Like for like

I must be slow, because obtaining the results for the MWC and completing it takes me longer than a couple of minutes, and more so when the understairs cupboard is full of rubbish.

And I was only giving my opinion.

Minor works - Like for like

No hope of me issuing a MWC to change a cracked light switch. I doubt house owners issue themselves a MWC when they replace a light switch. Do you also issue a MWC when you replace a customer's light bulb?

C/U Tails in wall - protection required

The existing C/U is at almost ceiling height in a room and the old tails are plastered in the wall below it before going outside to the meter cupboard (they have no protection and are just covered in plaster). The tails have to be upgraded when the C/U is replaced, so I could take the option of...

The Highs an' Lows of the Sole Trader Market

I have to agree with you regards the door knocking, as that is usually done by travellers or dodgey roofing blokes. I think If I got that desperate I would buy a bucket and sponge and become a window cleaner, at least then it would be fine door knocking asking if they wanted a window cleaner...

The Highs an' Lows of the Sole Trader Market

I agree that you have to push yourself if you really need the work for bills, even doing leaflet drops can get some work. Be careful not getting into the trap of doing cheap work when things are quiet (I mean quality work at cheap rates), because it might get you out of the house, but I made...

Stroma Certification Scheme NICEIC prices going up, thinking of going with stroma.

I went from the NICEIC to stroma to save money and regretted it. The guy that assessed me was a nightmare and was all over the place giving me misleading information. I appreciate that they are all not like that but I would have refused for him to assess me again (long story - he did pass me)...

    Heated towel rail (picture included)

They aren't redecorating the bathroom. They asked for a replacement towel rail, and I can't be sure of getting the right sized element that will fit it, so I wil go with a like for like replacement if possible.

No earth in lighting circuit what next?

His house was probably raided in the early hours and the police forensic team have been searching for the screwdriver he used to tighten the the lighting cable in the new C/U as evidence at his old Bailey trial.
