    RCBO’s and Supplementary bonding

Nothing to stop a mcb being installed but the installer should be aware that additional protection will be compromised,as would no (RCD) Residual Current Device to domestic lighting . If no exposed and extraneous conductive parts are simultaneously accessible I don’t see it’s a problem.

EICR question, OLD AC RCD- code 3 or no code?

BS7671 is not retrospective (from memory page 4 states that) , however we do code the the current edition of the regs as stated in GN3. to answer the question you have to assess the risk ,if only pure resistive loads are on an AC rcd no code or maybe fyi only, i would code C3 if other loads...

20 Volt oddity at recent rewire

I don’t think it’s a problem at all , as stated already it’s most likely caused by capacitance or inductance . You have already proved its not resistive . its not a test listed in GN3 or BS7671 . if it passes all other relevant test its fine. try loading the circuit down with a lamp and lamp...

Baumatic two zone induction hob - Needs a 20A double pole switched fused spur...

I’m sure it’s not possible the fuses only go up to 13 amp , you can get double pole 20 amp isolators

UK RCD tripping when using loft socket.

No problem we have all done it !

UK RCD tripping when using loft socket.

Usually wrong neutral bar , or wrong Wiring .does it trip before anything plugged in?

    Extranous conductive parts

I think it’s fed from a tank in the open loft area (no ceiling) of the bin store so it’s likely full of dead flys and whatever , why this was done I have no idea , I’m not sure if the tank is fed by mains water .

    RCD Tripping times question

We have a rcd test socket for our monthly calibrations ,we have 2 electricians doing at least 4 trips each per month for the last 5 years , it still trips at 19.6 ms every time. that’s still only 480 operations. if we assume 1 test button test every 6 months ,plus 4 every 5 years (in out...

    RCD Tripping times question

GN3 says that too many test will shorten the life span of the device and to counter that a 5 times test is discouraged, however I’m not sure I believe that ,most rcds I come across suffer from stiction .

    RCD Tripping times question

I take it they don’t use BS7671 there ? in any case i would guess coil rise time is providing a slight delay which is not offset by the extra current flow , its only a guess though only the manufacturer would really know why, are you testing just the device as a type AC with all loads...

    Extranous conductive parts

Its not always a good idea to bond regardless , this is why i do test from the met (in the cu ) to the suspected part , as far as i know the water is not used and is actually turned off from a lower stop cock , it seems a funny place to have a water supply of any type (under the stairs in...

    RCD Tripping times question

This is within error of measurement or maybe the inductance adds a tiny bit that is usually cancelled out by the increased current . In any case we don’t test at 5 x any more.

    Extranous conductive parts

During an EICR I have come across a metal tap and copper pipes supplied by a blue plastic pipe. This measures 0.022 MegOhms, this is directly under the consumer unit which is metal. Is this an extranous conductive part?

Question about reference method in insulated joists unclipped not totally enclosed

Reference methods are based on whether the heat from the cables can escape . if you have cables in a void but surrounded by insulation i count that as totally surrounded , but in real life some heat may dissipate due to the greater area. if there are only lighting circuits in a loft i would not...

    Corrigendum to BS_7671:2018+A2:2022

It’s out now it seems no SPD is required for fire or security alarms any more. 443.4.1 Transient overvoltages due to the effects of indirect lightning strokes Protection against transient overvoltages shall be provided where the consequence caused by the overvoltage could result in: (i) serious...

    Rcd disconnection time on TT

On a TT system the rcd must operate withing 0.2 seconds for many circuits. Why when we test rcd's does it not say 300ms for TN systems or 200 ms for TT systems?
