Electromagnetic effect in 4C Swa cable with high kA

Marconi, thanks for the links; the iet one we have already reviewed. The cooper one is interesting but, like most information we have found so far; refers to single core and /or single core arrangements- very frustrating. However it does offer an alternative avenue to explore via the cable...

    LED Floodlight nameplate (Power Rating)

Hi, looks like a Philips products code. The 100 relates to the lumen output 10,000 lumens, the WW refers to Warm White colour temperature 3000k. The unit uses 110w, watch out for the total startup current if you have a few on the same circuit and consider derating any circuit contactors.

    Power to shed. Thoughts?

As Tomspark mentions - if the 'bar' will only be a small load and it is a pain to route the SWA, then run from a FCU in the house spurred off skt ring. There is a IET Wiring Matters regards this very arrangement - see attached. Otherwise, unless there specific bonding requirements in the shed...

Electromagnetic effect in 4C Swa cable with high kA

Dave, this is our understanding but is there something in text that qualifies this. Thanks

Electromagnetic effect in 4C Swa cable with high kA

Thanks lee, We have reviewed the calc previously and it returns a value of over 100kN/m which is equivalent to a small battleship (1000 ton /m) This doesn't seem feasible and the cable cleats only appear to go upto 15kN/m. Andy, I'm assuming the design software hasn't flagged anything regards...

    Electrical certification Software

Amtech is now owned and supported by Trimble who have recently overhauled it in line with there updated pro design software. I understand it's the market leader but the recent updates haven't been kind. If you've not used amtech for a while then you will notice significant user interface...

Electromagnetic effect in 4C Swa cable with high kA

Hi All, hope someone can provide some clarity; We have a number of 400mm^2 4C Swa sub-mains subject to potential 43kA fault currents. Since the cables have TP&N contained within a shared SWA sheathing we were of the understanding that the electromagnetic response resulting in a violent and...

Corroded swa gland - garage CU

Following comments regards MCB compatibility and earth terminations, Schneider CPDs have been replaced with BG ones - the incoming isolator and earth was over complicating matters so these have been removed. Picture courtesy: professional-electrician.com God bless and sweet dreams.

Richard, can you clarify what is inappropriate regards the earth connection.

Corroded swa gland - garage CU

I got time last night (before Poldark) to swop out the gland and investigate the damage. As Marvo suggested, moisture has been entering the CU through the supply cable SWA; rain water appears to be entering the SWA via a degraded external joint box, this is then compounded by the use of a...

Corroded swa gland - garage CU

I envisaged some critique hence why I saved posting pictures of the CU until I got some concensus on the gland. As long as it's constructive. You've not seen the house CU yet! (Head in hands)

Corroded swa gland - garage CU

Thanks all, marvo I'm also convinced the moisture is eminating from the gland entry point. As you say, the rust is only present by that particular gland. However, the CU is well over a metre from ground level!? In regards the CU construction material, BG website isn't particularly helpful but...

Corroded swa gland - garage CU

Thanks all, the CU is aluminium and I thought the gland was copper / brass. It's the gland which appears to have failed, in this instance at the point it passes through the Al CU. I can't have this happening again, who knows how long ago it actually failed. I'll investigate Al glands.

Corroded swa gland - garage CU

That's what I was thinking. As you have probably already established, the swa is utilised as Cpc. As a consequence there is no separate dedicated bonding provided within the garage I.e. Earth rod / nest as this isn't required, however; one of the outgoing ways from the CU serves an external...

Corroded swa gland - garage CU

Hi, Have a garage consumer unit supplied from the house CU via a 6mm 2core swa. I noticed this morning the gland entering the garage CU was loose so opened it up to tighten up the gland lock nut. Unfortunately it appears the gland as it enters the garage cu has corroded and brocken away from...
