fibre optic alternative to trailer wiring

If your trying to eliminate relays, you could consider solid state switches - they offer the same functionality but have no moving parts so are very reliable, especially in hostile environments.

    Excessive??? Compact fluorescents failing.

This lamp type does not like high switching cycles. Increasing the timer period on the pirs might reduce lamp failure rates.

    Electricians - russian style

Regards the original post, his method reminds me of those twisty caps the yanks use to connect cables together ... except with an arch welder and shrink wrap. Sometimes I wonder if we do things right in the uk, In this instance I ’m reassured - thanks OP

    Emergency Light Rules/Regs?

5266-1 sums up the vast majority of other BS. You might also consider.BS9999 in relation the fire-fighting shafts for multistory buildings. Building regulations part B provide the most onerous of the emergency requirements. I’d start there if I was you. IHS portal offers BS but I think it’s a...

    Moved a BT master socket

I don’t think anyone has mentioned the small risk of electrocution from a lightning stroke, striking an exposed telecoms cable on the nearby network I.e. Drop wire. Also, the exchange will run sporadic line checks (usually in the small hours) to detect line faults; if you’re work coincides...

600M Electrical feed to farm house underground.

Steve, have you spoken to the local DNO regards anew meter at the location. 600m Is considerable and the associated conductor size required at LV would be significant. The DNO would likely quote MV supply to a small column mounted step down transform - see what they quote.

running a house from car batteries for the electrical idiot

OP DC is the future, as already suggested; make sure your using LED lamps, the 12v twin pin MR16 ones will be most cost effective. I’d also suggest you get a deep cell leisure battery rather than using a standard car starter battery. Also, don’t try using this system for any space or water...

    Advice on garage supply

OP if your still listening and apology’s if another poster has already suggested this; why not get a Electrician to review what you want to do, confirm cable type / sizes etc and return in a week or two to test and sign-off. This way you get the satisfaction of saving a few quid and...

18th edition final changes released by IET

In reference to the arc fault protection - my understanding to the phrase ‘recommended’ is that unless you can come up with a dam good reason not to, you put it in. The whole of BS7671 is a recommendation - how offen do you deviate from that? I though they where going to change the wording to...

Test failed due to missing RCD

Retrospective improvements to old installations should be based on a cost vs risk assessment - circa £30 for an RCD sounds like a sensible cost given the significant risk reduction it achieves as a result. However, I don’t believe the installation should have failed in the first instance. You...
