Good Morning Thread - Come say good morning, tell us what you've got on today. :)

Yet another disciplinary, my third one in the past month. The first 2 resulted in me dismissing the persons (not a nice job) this one so far is looking likely to be a final written warning. I honestly think COVID has more of an impact on people's behaviour than we often realise, even just...

Poor EICR report results in prosecution

Agreed, however the sparky in question may well be competent to carry out a proper inspection & test, but decided to either fudge it or just couldn't be arsed to do it properly. It's not uncommon to see this sort of thing, especially those that are open to bribes or monetary gains for little...

    Can I use a 4mm T&E for a 7.5Kw shower?

My elderly parents live with me, both are very much retired but are keen gardeners. I can guarantee that the minute I get home from work and decide to take a shower they either go water the plants or start washing up... They are both at the house all day, but still chose to use the water right...

    Can I use a 4mm T&E for a 7.5Kw shower?

I would personally recommend to the customer that the cable requires upgrading as it was incorrectly rated for the installation method in the first place. However, rather than a scaremongering approach, I would focus on the benefits such as the possibility of a larger rated shower unit, like...

Why do commercial sparks bash house bashers?

I think its a matter of perception, a rather poor one. There is a stigma around "house bashers" because of some of the things that have already been pointed out in this thread. I mentioned before that domestic work is the prime target for dodgy tradespeople, not just in electrics but all the...

Good Morning Thread - Come say good morning, tell us what you've got on today. :)

Up to my eye balls in meetings and budgets today. Going "The Dog Fest" at Tatton Park with the missus tomorrow, to earn some brownie points for when I spend the whole day on Sunday with my mates out on our enduro bikes, then curry and beer for tea.

"ToughBuilt" new cases etc have arrived in UK

Yeah, or when other trades happen on it and "borrow" a tool when passing. I remember not too long back when I got in from a job to find an extra set of plier grips in my tote bag. Unusual to gain a tool on a site! No doubt someone was in the habit of borrowing and then returning but had mistaken...

Why do commercial sparks bash house bashers?

I agree, I don't think we should tar everyone with the same brush. We should applaud and support our industry and the people within it in all aspects of the job! A skilled electrician is a skilled tradesperson regardless of whether its domestic, commercial, industrial or any other... The crux...

"ToughBuilt" new cases etc have arrived in UK

I do like the open tote style for convenience, however they tend to get filled up with dust and crap very quickly, which is rather annoying. Plus you have nothing to stand or sit on.

"ToughBuilt" new cases etc have arrived in UK

Reminds me of a builder I know, who has an old bucket full of old tools, (well, lump hammer and chisels mainly), that he inherited from his grandfather. He refuses to buy any new tools, and still to this day continues with his old bucket of scrap.

    Customer not paying

I've had similar experiences myself many times, for much higher amounts on occasion. Follow the advice been given so far, however, be prepared for possible disappointment also. Most importantly learn from this experience and apply measures that will help to avoid this situation in the future...

RCCB tripping but no MCBs have tripped.

If the problem has only started to happen since the circuit has been altered then its most likely something like a trapped cable as Snowhead suggested (this is very common), or something existing has been disturbed. I'd start by visually checking all the items that have been replaced (remove...

Dodgy trade pictures for your amusement! - 1 Million Views!

Reason I asked is that I attended a similar situation a few years back. The destruction was devastating, all caused by heat escaping from a kiln that caused a flat wooden roof to combust. I spent quite a bit of time with the fire investigator to determine if an electrical fault had been...

Why do commercial sparks bash house bashers?

This is not true! not all "house bashers" are the short course bodge it and scarper type! I know good electricians who can only do commercial/industrial and are clueless when it comes to domestic and vice versa. A good all round domestic sparky has to do a fair bit of problem solving, fault...

    Buried SWA cable fault finding

Absolutely, you have got to completely rule out all the obvious and exposed parts first, else it could end up an unnecessary expensive repair.
