How was the old light connected?
This appears to be a loop in/out system. Where there will be permanent lives, a switched live, neutral conductors and CPC conductors.
But looking at the condition of the cables from your picture, I would leave it to the professionals.!
I wouldn't advise you...
Installation Terminal Blocks and Connectors – Simple Wiring in Building Technology - https://www.wago.com/gb/electrical-interconnections/discover-installation-terminal-blocks-and-connectors
You will require one that is suitable for up to 1.5mm2 that accepts 2 cables. Most electrical suppliers...
Yes you connect the earth conductor (green & yellow) from the new light fitting to the circuit protection conductor (earth - green & yellow) as seen in your picture. Don't just twist them together and tape up though! please use an appropriate connector suitable for that connection.
I forgot to clarify, for an mcb you would be looking for the total load current to see if or when it is exceeding the rating of the device. For an RCD you would be looking for the total current imbalance to see if or when that is exceeding the rating of the device. For a combined rcd and mcb...
As Lucien says^^^^ As the electrician you should already have a clear understanding of protection device's functionalities and what type of fault you are expecting to be looking for. Hence the suggestions previously mentioned regarding checking the current flowing through the device.
When you come across faults like these that are not blatantly obvious then you have to follow a process of elimination and commonality. The actual details in the facts matter so it almost becomes like a court of law situation where you need the actual details from the users. Then you can start...
If the circuits are completely separated as you claim, yet both trip simultaneously then there has to be a common factor that you have not inspected. If the lights do indeed dim just before the RCBO's trip then this may point to an intermittent imbalance mains issue. Have you checked the incomer...
Hi Bilabonic, Take Tim's advice ^^^^
£75 sounds way too cheap to me and could be a "drive by" inspection. The visit should involve, inspections to a chunk of the wiring and how its installed, many accessories removed, inspected and tested etc.. so this means take a few lights down, removing a...
It seems he has done a good job, and it may be that all the work has been completed to a good standard and signed-off/certified accordingly.
I don't have an issue if this is the case and take my hat off to anyone who is interested in doing such. However as Littlespark mentioned it can give...
Well done,
Though doubtful he learned all the necessary skills just from just YouTube clips, you require a pretty diverse hands on skill set to begin with to undertake all the work involved in a project like this. Also the cost difference is bound to be significant, the quotes from the builders...
Ok, look at it this way. The purpose of the RCD/RCBO is to add additional protection in the event of a fault occurring. The basic idea being that if a fault occurred during use that could potentially kill you this additional device will operate so that you are least likely to receive an electric...
A bit crude but I'll throw it out there.
I have seen it done with some success before, If you allow the exposed screed to cool right down then soak it in water for a while so it goes damp, then immediately whack on the UFH full throttle you sometimes get slightly dryer lines forming initially...
Don't start me on this one!!
The world has gone soft full stop, all this ----- footing around is just creating a load of "snowflakes" (pun intended).
My school never closed, ever. Oh, actually come to think of it there was once a bomb scare, where we had to vacate the premises for a few hours...
Any chance you could send me this kid's number. I could use his magical powers, I pay good rates. Can he do any other tricks?
Seriously though do you actually believe that this is magic?
Yep, I agree this is the failing of the system though not Cliff. All he can do is report what he finds and advice accordingly to the requirements.
We all know the client is not going go to the expense of having the work done. But if there was ever a fire and the ceiling came down and a fire...
All true and we all come across it regularly. But for the purpose of the report then Cliff should code it accordingly and offer the advise to the client based on the regs. It's up to the client then to decide if they want it improving.
Since the cables are incorrectly supported then you can code it accordingly for that departure. Then advise the client based on your findings - either some containment or additional support in line with the current regs should be installed.
Ok, well its good that you are coming to these forums to learn. Sometimes faults like these can be difficult to pin point.
As an apprentice I would suggest that its not your fault. But as Lucien described in his post faults like this need to be rectified, not just ignored just because the RCBO...
