Found this in my 4 year old house...

I'm a huge fan of wago connectors, unfortunately the connectors I own only go upto 4mm so no good in this case. Also, a lot of my tools and gear went to my Fathers garage before I moved and I've yet to collect it so I didn't have any cable when I started this job last night! Instead...

Found this in my 4 year old house...

I agree with you to a point but I've always been of the opinion that it's best practice to earth the SWA at the start and not the end. Ideally the SWA should be earthed at both ends which I will eventually do. My garage is being turned into a mini workshop so I will be installing a new single...

Found this in my 4 year old house...

I've just moved into a new house, It's a 4 year home built by a major developer. The previous couple who lived here were non-diy savvy and from speaking to them on numerous occasions the only work done on the house was decorating and flooring which they got people in to do. Now, the house has...

20 Year Old Contactum CU MCB's

The board has a 100A 30mA RCBO as the main switch.

20 Year Old Contactum CU MCB's

Ah, really? I don't know why, I always thought that would be a no-no despite the fact I can't think of any technical reason for it.

20 Year Old Contactum CU MCB's

There's no nearby socket or spur on the ring to spur off without chasing walls and liftng floorboards! Not what my 89 year old grandmother will want. New socket is going in directly below the boxed-in CU so a little YT1 down the corner of the room should be subtle and a clean install.

20 Year Old Contactum CU MCB's

16A or 20A MCB. A single socket is required just below the CU, easier to put it on a 2.5mm radial than try to split the ring. Is there much else to say about Bridgend other than 'meh'. It's only selling point is it's half way between Cardiff and Swansea and you can be in Bristol in an hour!

20 Year Old Contactum CU MCB's

Need to add an extra MCB in a 20 year old Contactum CU fitted in my Grandmothers house. The board is a Contactum P6R. It has flat faced MCB's, does anyone know if the newer curved face MCB's will fit? Or of an alternative MCB that will fit? I have a stock of Schneider, Dorman Smith & MK...

    Terminal corrosion on AC compressors.

I use the same #00 grade wire wool to polish chrome exhaust tips on my cars so I can't imagine it would damage any plating!

    Terminal corrosion on AC compressors.

I've had to use a special grease before now on terminations where copper and alluminium are present to minimise corrosion between dissimilar metals. I can't think what it's called now! Might be with packing out the terminals with such a grease to minimise corrosion. I use fine wire wool and...

Consumer unit ...which way to go?

I used two single phase Schneider Acti9 10 way boards in my own house. They were left over from a job I was on a few years ago. One board services the house and the other the kitchen. Everything is on individual RCBO's apart from the supply to the kitchen CU. Acti9 boards are superb, probably...

    Money grabbing training centre

I think the fast track course should exist but only for experienced people. I'm sure we all know Electricians mates or labourers who have been in the industry for years who are considered as good as an Electrician.

Advise needed. Diesel generator loading issues

Do we know if these generator engines are run-in in the factory or is there a strict run-in procedure that has been neglected? I've seen plenty of well broken in generators run nothing but light loads for years on end and they don't use a drop of oil! If it's bore glazing I would recommend...

    Upgrading my garage supply.

Had a read, I would argue that installing a small CU would be providing the same level of protection a fused spur would. Just because it's not the norm, does not make it wrong or unsafe. All cables would be sufficiently protected. Would I do it in my own house? No, I'd run a new supply from...

    Upgrading my garage supply.

Show me where in BS7671 does my plan fall short? Like I said, I'm always up for learning.

    Upgrading my garage supply.

I see a reasonable solution here. Mount a small consumer unit in the house over where the current 13A fused spur sits, feed it with the ring main. Fit two MCBs, 6A and 20A. Use the existing 1.5mm SWA onto the 6A breaker for a lighting circuits and install another 2.5mm SWA for power. If you...

    18th Edition Energy Saving Matters

Unsure how true but I have heard there will be emphasis on using increased conductor sizes to minimise heat loss in cables. I can see us running 10mm ring mains on 20A MCBs! :D The last few jobs I've run the consultants have specified 2.5mm lighting circuits on 10A MCBs and 4mm ring mains on...

Part P training . It must be stopped

I completely agree. My Father was on the tools from when he left school up until his 40's. Me however, I was only on the tools for 6 years, 4 of those as an apprentice. But equally the person signing off our work could do a fast track 5 week course to become an 'electrcian', followed by their...

Part P training . It must be stopped

I'm a qualified electrician who completed a 4 year apprenticeship and went on to do a HNC in Building Services Engineering. I'm also a very competent tester, but have yet to do my inspection and testing. My Father is a qualified electrician who did an appreticeship and also has his inspection...
