    Remote Isolator On Locked Disboard/CU

3 Phase boards locked in risers for lighting and power. Each communal kitchen has a single phase board in the kitchen feeding final circuits feeding all the kitchen accessories (cooker, fridge, freezer, oven, dishwasher etc). These boards are accessible with a locked front cover... if that...

    Remote Isolator On Locked Disboard/CU

So what happens in public buildings where boards are fitted in locked risers and store rooms? Do we put emergency stops in? Rotary isolators outside the doors?

    Remote Isolator On Locked Disboard/CU

Brown, black and grey cables are all line colours so should be treated as such unless marked otherwise. Having previously had a nasty belt from neutral to earth I'd also argue a blue cable would present a danger. I still don't see how an external isolator would help? What happens in more...

    Remote Isolator On Locked Disboard/CU

"Where a danger could occur" is far too vague for my liking. I could understand workshops or boiler houses where maintenance might be occurring, not accommodation. Your talking about a location where every single phase final circuit is RCBO protected. Would an isolator really help any situation?

    Remote Isolator On Locked Disboard/CU

That's my next port of call. It would have been nice to phone up confidently and ask why they're making stuff up though. ;)

    Remote Isolator On Locked Disboard/CU

Afternoon All, Maybe an odd question. For the last 8 years I've been in this industry I have always fitted single and 3 phase disboard/CU's with locks and no remote isolator other than on a locked main panel. I'm on a new job where we are using a mix of Siemens 3 phase boards and Crabtree...

    Pathway to teaching?

I worked for a college for 8 months last year. I started as an NVQ Assessor and doing the occasional lecture. Pay was awful, started on £21,750. Luckily I was out in the car most days and making a few quid on the 40p a mile allowance I had. I was promised the pay would rise rapidly but it...

    HELP! Down light installation??

Also a spark in a 4 year old home. I would choose cutting holes in the ceilings than taking up the chipboard floors. Also, if I was buying a brand new house I'd pay to get everything done. Don't buy a brand new house and rip it to pieces.

    3 X single phase showers

This thread is worrying. This is basic electrical theory. They are single phase loads so no, the neutral current won't be zero. Simplifying this as best as I can... Each phase is AC at 50Hz and 120° from eachother. That means only one phase will be moving current down the neutral conductor...

    Capping installation methods

I've always said if I had a plot if land to build a house on it would be a bungalow with galv trunking run through the loft and galv conduit drops everywhere. No CPC cables, just the containment used as CPC. But then again, I've always been a bit bloody odd.

Female electricians, for better or for worse?

Exactly that. If I need 2 sparks I phone an agency and ask for 5. 2 won't show and at least one of them will be crap so I get shot of then. I don't care if they're male, female whatever. I want value for money. We tender jobs these days with no or little profit and the try to claw back...

Do you Wago? (222 lever type)

I'm currently working on a student accommodation building as a Junior Engineer. We have two situations where WAGO's will save a lot of time. The first we had originally planned to use a Hager J501 junction box above a light in each of the bedrooms however they're taking more than half hour...

Which wholesaler is your preferred option and why? Is it just price?

I work for a large contracting firm so we have approved suppliers. All the major wholesalers are on the list. Company procedures is you go out for a price on everything to 3 suppliers minimum and go with the best price. CEF never come close on price so usually end up ordering from Rexel and...

Female electricians, for better or for worse?

I'm of the opinion that anyone can be a good electrician, male or female. However, I've never worked with a female electrician. I did work for 8 months as an assessor for a local college and had one girl apprentice electrician. Her employer had been repeatedly raising concerns about her...

18th ed Arc Fault Devices - £120 each!

I went to the ECA Project 18 conference on Cardiff on Friday. They were quite clear, AFDDs in the 18th are a reccomendation and not mandatory. Basically it's something you should consider and speak to your client about.

Shower on Ceiling Light Flickers - advice needed please

This to me seems an obvious fault with the new shower. There was a 9.5KW shower fitted previously and everything was absolutely fine.

Found this in my 4 year old house...

Cheers guys! Will definitely have to stock up on them. Next weekend I have to rip out the sink in the utility room to make room for a tumble dryer. I was hoping buying a new-ish house would mean less work for me!
