Better to adapt/convert the house CU so that the garage is fed from an MCB that is not RCD-protected.
(aka a "high-integrity" CU - who invented that ridiculous title?)
Locate the RCD at the garage end to replace the isolation switch. Then, if there is an earth fault, that will only trip the...
Belated congrats
Not late to the party, this is my way of posting something to stop those nagging emails because i havent been on here for a while.
Dont worry, I'm still alive. Just doing other things at the moment. I'll be back. X
If you look at it as the number of tests required in a year. An RCD test every 3 months is 4. An RCD test every 6 months is 2.
So, a decrease in occurrence of the test.
If you were using a regular digital multimeter then you will see spurious voltages like this. Those tester things are very high impedance and will pick up stray voltages because of inductance effects between connected cables.
Hang any sort of load (eg shunt reseistor) between the two...
I dont go maintaining/cleaning my fans at night time, so I (radical I know) wander over to the consumer unit and turn off the MCB for the circuit that powers the fan.
i have indulged myself on there from time to time, but it always turns into a bunfight. I feel sorry for any trusting person who goes on to ask an honest question.
@diditrain if you are quick, there's one just up on FleaBay today!!

That’s your second opinion then.
When I was “on the tools” I hated customers who bought their own materials. Often it was just plain wrong, or some cheapo tat that wouldn’t last a week. Or it hadn’t arrived. All of these added to time on thd job, and cost the customer more ££.
On more than...
Sorry.
With respect, you are considering a brand new circuit. That is notifiable work and not a DIY project.
You need a registered electrician to do this work for you, to test, certify the installation and notify the local authority that the work complies with building regulations.
