wondering about this incoming before the distibution board

A properly designed installation would have a lower- rated fuse in the KMF than that in the service head. Otherwise there will be no discrimination.

wondering about this incoming before the distibution board

Very simple. The maximum length allowed for the meter tails connection to the consumer unit is 3 metres. If it is more than that a fuse must be provided to provide over-current protection. You can’t have 10metre tails only protected by the supplier’s fuse that is in the service head.

If i've got a light with one cable, and its switch has one cable, how is it wired?

Most of 20th century up to about mid 1960’s. You’ll notice from the pix above that no earth is provided and that wasn’t introduced for lighting circuits until 1966. At that point (I guess) an Octopus became unwieldy as you might have a large number of earth wires to common up in one box. What...

If i've got a light with one cable, and its switch has one cable, how is it wired?

Back in the distant past, domestic lighting circuits used humungeous junction boxes where all of the switches and light fittings joined. Usually there was one hidden under the floor of the landing / for the ground floor lights. The upstairs box was in the loft. Known as Octopus boxes. They...

Is this Intermediate switching image from the Student's Guide wrong?

The wiring isn't done like that for the (common) loop in at lamp method. In fact, the student diagram is from wiring that was done a very long time ago.......

Replacing MK Consumer Unit. Main switch position

Hello mates. i have an MK CU to replace. As you may know, the main switch in MKs is on the left hand side. There's no way to replace the meter tails. Is there another manufacturer that has a left-hand main switch CU, or a flexible position option? Thanks muchly!

    Sequencing of RCDs and MCBs

Not quite. An MCB provides overload (or short circuit )protection. The RCD provides protection for EARTH FAULT current, not short circuit protection.

    UK Emergency lighting regs

I don’t get out much now, but never seen one of these. I am doubtful that it will meet the relavent standards. Do you have a link to the product? does this “sticker” light up in the event of a power failure? Will it remain illuminated for 2 hours? How does it “recharge” itself? Ps. As this...

So, What can I actually do now?

The stumbling block is the requirement to notify certain work. In England*, notification is needed for: New or replacement consumer unit The provision of a new circuit Electrical work inside bathroom zones To be able to self-notify works you would first need to join one of the competent person...

    Do I need to rewire?

A way round that temptation to “create” work is to make it clear to the testing electrician that, he/she would not be doing any remedial works.

    Do I need to rewire?

Well, yes. But I was trying to make a simple comparison for the OP to illustrate that the test results can’t be believed.

    Do I need to rewire?

The key indicator is the Insulation Resistance figure. The minimum allowed is 2Megohm. Older installations degrade over time from their initial installation results. The report shows an IR figure of greater than 500Megohm on all circuits. That is a figure that is hard to get even on a newly...
