Cable Stapler for Alarm and Cat5e Cable.

Ref. alarm cable, I believe that if installing to grade 3 you can't use staples. Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

    Tri-rated vs singles

Thanks for all the replies. Good point about the ferrules, but I have loads in stock for terminating flex. Davesparks - TLC have Tri-rated cheaper than singles: 1.5mm² Black 6491X - £17.60 / 100m 1.5mm² Tri Rated Cable - Black - BS6231 - £15.23 / 100m TBH I don't use singles much either, but...

    Tri-rated vs singles

Is it OK to use tri-rated cable in conduit rather than singles (6491X)? Obviously of correct rating. If so, why would anyone buy singles as the tri-rated is cheaper and seems nicer to use (I have not used it before until very recently, hence the question). Cheers

    External wall dowlight with MR16

Hi Does anyone have a link for something like this, but with takes MR16s rather than GU10s as I need to use a 12v supply: The only one I can find is about £50. I'm looking for something a bit cheaper than that. Cheers

    Labeling solution.

I had a Dymo Rhino until recently when I was offered a free trade-in for an all singing all dancing XTL500. Only problem is the cost of the tape. So bought a Brother PT-100VP from screwfix for about £20. The machine, case, PSU and roll of tape was cheaper than a reel of 12mm tape for the XTL...

    Thick plasterboard wall?

Not stricly an electrical question so apologies if this is the wrong place to ask... Has anyone ever come accross a dividing wall which appears to be solid/thick plasterboard? Drilling in for fixing trying to feel for the cavity and drill bit emerged in room next door. Wall seems to be...

    decent wired alarm

+1 for Texecom. Their support is great even for non-pro alarm fitters.

    Multi Tool

+1 for the Fein, the case is also well thought out with plenty of space for blades and accessories which is not always the case (Bosch please take note)

the most important tools for starting off!

I would add a pair of safety glasses and wear them whenever anything could potentially fly, pop, or spring off. Expect some people to take the mick, but you only get one pair of eyes.

DeWalt Combi on offer at Screwfix

DeWalt = 1 year warranty, all other "professional" makes = 3 years. Still don't understand why people buy DeWalt...

    Starter Toolkit

Everyone has their favourites, but in my experience Facom, CK, Knipex, NWS all make good tools. Stanley FatMAX VDE drivers also good. Recently tried some Wera drivers and liked them. Estwing for hammers (or at least something where is head and shaft are one piece). Most Bahco is good too but...

Reciprocating Saw / DeWalt warranty question?

Hi I am thinking about getting a reciprocating saw, sounds useful for many things and would also be useful for cutting up logs. Having looked at the options the Bosch GSA1100E seems the best but I see DeWalt do one which has a rotating blade so you can flush cut. Which all sounds good until...

    texecom panel

I installed a Texecom Premier in my house a couple of years ago having never touched alarms before. Was mostly pretty straitforward, but a few issues cropped up and Texecom support were very helpful. A few tips from my experience: If you use the higher end PIRs you only need to take the DC...

    ALDI SDS Drill bits

ALDI are currently selling a set of three 1m SDS drill bits, 12mm 16mm and 24mm for £10. Not something I would expect to use much and not something I would expect to be great quality, but for that price I think worth having in stock.

    Milwaukee or Makita??

I was asking myself the same question last year. Bought a Metabo. Best drill/driver I've ever owned, 3 year warranty on batteries too. And the case is really well thought out, with space for drill bits etc. Bosch/Makita take note!!
