Freelance kitchen fitter doing electrical work.

Popped in my Sisters house earlier today to see how she was getting on having a new kitchen fitted. First impressions were quite good, install of units so far seemed good, new floor was good, my sister then pointed out the new sockets that he had installed. Sockets were loose ready for him to...

Battery discharging over night WITH charge controller

I would check to see if any current is being drawn by the charge controller at night that is causing the drain?

    Which Starter Contactor

Yes, but full load currents do vary depending on efficiency and number of poles. Always best to rate control gear from information on the motor plate.

    Which Starter Contactor

Can you post this paperwork? Do you have the full load current of the motor? Also what does this motor drive as this may affect the duty rating of the contactor and also may determine if a safety circuit may need to be incorporated.

    Contactor control circuit

I think I would use a current sensing relay to monitor the load taken by the lamp. Omron do a nice little unit that will sense down to 2mA

    Contactor control circuit

How are you trying to achieve this at the moment? A sketch of your circuit would be interesting to see as what you are trying to do is not as easy as it seems.

    Surge Protection Devices

Thought I’d do a bit of browsing on this subject and stumbled across this video from the grand old US of A by a guy who calls himself the ‘Surge Protector Guy’.. great I thought this could be informative... I watched and was left thinking ..Why?

    Smart meters yes or no?

Big no from me too! I think there are other motives for these; 1. Peak time billing, they will be able to introduce tariffs where you pay more at certain times. 2. The ability to turn off the customer, this is fine for genuine non payers, but I can see simple bill disputes or even the energy...

If you do happen to use an extension lead, make sure it is fully uncoiled before using the machine.

    Voltage Optimisation Units

Hi All, Have come across a site today where the client has had a voltage optimisation unit fitted on his incoming mains supply. The supply transformer is rated at 2MVA, and the voltage optimiser at 2250A (which appears to be undersized to me!) Just wondering if anyone has come across these...

    Wiring my 8 pole motor

Yep, has to be 3 phase 230v. Some of the smaller variable speed drives on the market are single phase input at 230v, three phase output at 230v.

    Wiring my 8 pole motor

He could buy a 230v single phase to three phase variable speed drive and connect the motor in delta. That would then run off a domestic supply

    Wiring my 8 pole motor

The motor is shown wired in Star configuration for a 400v 3ph supply. Connect the three phase 400v supply via a suitable starter to the terminals marked U1, V1 & W1. The two blue wires are a thermistor, this will need a seperate Thermistor relay that will detect the change in resistance of the...

    Circuit Breaker drops before Fuse

I’m afraid I do not agree with this, What many people may not realise is that a 13A rated fuse is not designed to actually blow at 13A. In fact a 13A fuse will allow a current of 20A to pass indefinitely without blowing. If you look at the attached graph, it shows the operating characteristics...
