Why are the RCD trip times for I and 5I 300ms and 40ms

Thanks guys... I think the values are selected to reduce the current flow (as westward10 and others have suggested) rather than having anything to do with the actually heart beat/frequency. I'd be interested to hear a medical explanation though....

Why are the RCD trip times for I and 5I 300ms and 40ms

Is there any particular reason why the trip times for RCDs at I and 5I are the values they are (300ms and 40ms). Is there some particular medical reason why?? I'm just curious, no particular reason but may weave that into the conversation next time I'm in the pub!!

    Rationalizing two boards into one

My fault....there are two existing CCUs. He wants them combining to make room for other stuff in his garage - I think it's a 'man-cave' he's creating, although thought it best not to ask....

    Rationalizing two boards into one

Hi I've agreed to do a job for a mate. He needs a consumer unit moving from one side of a garage side door to the other (door connects to the house). At the same time, he wants to combine a second CCU with the wiring from the first one. Modern-ish house and no load issues so combining the two...

    New wagobox-XL........

These look ideal for addressing cowboy lighting wiring. Ever come across a mass of cables hidden under insulation in a loft? Last surveillance visit I had I asked the inspector about such situations but he said you shouldn't be correcting other electricians wiring... That said, replacing a host...

buzzing led problem , thinking of using lower watt bulbs

Ever since I had an issue with buzzing and flickering I now only fit Varilight V Pro dimmers for LED downlights. Not had any problems since but the clients often have issues with the cost (£45+).

Four Ring Circus - an unconventional method of wiring ring finals

I rewired it all as a single ring but ran a new ring for the dining room sockets and the odd single socket... Also ran a new radial for the oven.. It's a full house refurb and the floorboards are all loose at the mo. Tests out just fine now. Got until July to complete...

Four Ring Circus - an unconventional method of wiring ring finals

No idea myself. I'd have thought connecting rings in parallel would effectively reduce the resistance and therefore potentially increase the current through the cable. That said, it's my day off so that might be boll%$£"ks...

Four Ring Circus - an unconventional method of wiring ring finals

Yeah, that was my thoughts. I've heard of this but never come across one until today.

Four Ring Circus - an unconventional method of wiring ring finals

Yes sort of. It looks like the original wiring went straight to the kitchen then the two JBs added later...

Four Ring Circus - an unconventional method of wiring ring finals

I've been working in a Victorian semi. I was asked by the client to take a look at the wiring for the kitchen ring final - in particular the state of the wiring under the floor boards. What I found was a mass of cables connected into two 30A screw-terminal junction boxes. On closer examination...

Neferious wiring to the hot side of an electricity meter

    ....but that is illogical captain....

Neferious wiring to the hot side of an electricity meter

Had to laugh at all this... Thanks for the replies. I will advise the client to inform his DNO.....and see where that goes....

Neferious wiring to the hot side of an electricity meter

That would mean breaking into the meter and I don't fancy that (being a self-confessed wuss). There would still be a hole in the top of it where the wire came out....

Neferious wiring to the hot side of an electricity meter

I thought of that but he'd know who it was and I could do without that aggravation. Besides, it wasn't his fault as he hadn't lived with his dad for some years....

Neferious wiring to the hot side of an electricity meter

Here’s one for you: A friend of a friend asked me to assess the wiring in his recently deceased father’s house – a small bungalow in fact. Now the Dad (‘Frank’) was a bit of a botcher so I was expecting the worst. Consumer unit – perfect with the wiring all neatly fitted etc. Wiring for the...

HD Sportster 883 Custom. Stage 1. My wife refused to sit on the pillion until I got a more comfortable seat - so, I fitted a 'Sundowner' retro seat - stopped that annoying whining noise straightaway!

    Help! Advice please.

Notwithstanding all the valid arguments regarding being contacted first about remedial actions etc etc, surely if you replaced a CCU and have therefore tested all the circuits therein, would you not then be liable for the integrity of those circuits? Unless of course you made specific reference...

Just when you think there's no more surprises.

Photo says it all. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I come across this sort of 'installation' week in week out. Worst one I ever came across was a shower cable that went from 6mm to 2.5mm then back to 6mm - all wired into 'choc bloc'... and buried in the ceiling void.
