    AFDD BS number

I've just fitted some (Wylex) AFDD/RCBO's for the first time, what goes in the box on the cert regarding the BSEN number, 62606 is for AFDD's and 61009 is for RCBO's. which one is for both? As a side note can I just say how crazy it is to have a red light showing that everything is ok when...

Looking for some pure white sockets and switches

Just get the customer to buy whatever he wants and fit it, don't get involved in showing them endless makes and models only for them to turn their nose up time after time. I had one customer once who didn't like the clicking sound the switches made and wanted me to swap them for something quieter.

    Getting Older and Slower

I soke too soon, my back went today whilst finishing the roof on my extension. getting off a roof and down a 2 storey ladder is no fun at all. Even worse was I had to get back up again to show my mate where the tiles went back to make it water tight.

    Landlords certificate.

Well I've been back and done a full EICR now and its not that bad, after I disconnected a few lethal things obviously. Old but not really messed with, newish metal consumer unit, new bonding etc. I'm filling in the report now and one question always gets me and I struggle to answer it "reason...

    Landlords certificate.

I will be so glad when I retire, every day is a mind-bogle of insanity. This is how the conversation went a few days ago. ----------- hi I need a visual landlords cert for one of my rental properties Ok are you sure its just a visual cert you need, they are only 1 page long but a full EICR is...

How long would this take you to do, on price?

How can that only take a day and a half to 2nd fix? There is at least half a day doing the mains and testing. Me and my mate can 2nd fix a 3 bed house in 2 days, 60 points or so. Maybe finish a bit early on the second day but basically its 4 days labour. £1200 labour at least.

    Landlords certificate.

Are these still a thing? I've been asked to do a couple for someone who rents a few houses out as a side line. I've had a quick loot at the property and from a safety point of view its fine, although its an old and scruffy installation. If I was to do an EICR on it it would probably "fail" on a...

    Getting Older and Slower

I'm still doing ok at 53, just today I squeezed through a trap and crawled round a wet sub floor without any problem. The hardest bit was physically fitting in the hole, thats becoming more of a problem just lately. However I do find now by 3PM I'm ready for home, gone are the days of working...

Philips LED retrofit tubes & DALI, might this all go Pete Tong?

I know it was a few years ago when LED was mor in its infancy but we looked at a job that had designer flo light fittings in a big bar. The fittings cost the owner an arm and a leg so he didn't want to change the whole thing and just wanted the tubes replacing with LED. The cost of the LED...

Set up for oven + combi?

I've put a 2 way unit inside kitchen cupboards before now if we were re-using the original cooker supply but the customer wanted 2 x 16A ovens. I know from a safety point of view both ovens would be quite safe on a 32A front end MCB but we are always told to follow the manufacturers...

    25mm swa armour for cpc

I get that but why would they manufacture a cable that couldn't cope with a fault it could cause.

    25mm swa armour for cpc

You mean for if the cable is damaged by say a spade or something and you want to ensure the MCB/fuse blows in the required time? Well I've not done any calculations or anything but I would imagine that they wouldn't make the SWA in long lengths if that was a possibility, that's just common sense...

    25mm swa armour for cpc

Why do you need an earth/cpc if its powering a TT installation.

    NICEIC Test Sheets

My mate keeps banging on about doing test sheets on the job electronically to save time but I just cant see the point and prefer a clipboard and paper. No-one will rob the clipboard, if you leave it on a job it doesn't matter, if you drop it it won't break and you can fill in the forms properly...

new pully-switch to turn on my shower but the Electrician said it would be against company policy

I read it as he couldn't lock the circuit off to work on it.

Convert kiln from 415 triple phase to 240v

Its a strange old world isn't it, I suggested treating a piece of SWA as a piece of flex when a customer couldn't gland a few brick lights off properly purely as an alternative to demolishing the whole wall and apparently I was bang out of order, didn't care about human life and it would surely...

Whatever you are doing with it do it outside or in a shed well away from the house.
