    Updated best practice guide #4

Only to the customer though or maybe a court if our advice goes horribly wrong. Not to some random charity that has set themselves up as some kind of pseudo authority, they can go swivel.

    Updated best practice guide #4

But nothing is set in law of what you can and cant code, if I class a wonky label on the consumer as a C1 then its no-one elses business apart from the miffed off person paying me.

    Updated best practice guide #4

Who on earth are "Electrical safety first" and what on earth is "Obs" and "NC only"when it comes to codes. Yet more gobbledygook.

    Wylex 3 phase board fitting.

The boards I ended up getting came with a load of plastic clip in blanks, very flimsy and wouldn't take very much to push through but obviously wylex thinks they are good enough and they must be compliant otherwise they wouldn't include them. As for the metal blanks, the ones that you have to...

How can I generate 220v ac using a car battery, dc motor and inverter

If that had any chance of working why would you even need the battery, just connect the motor to the alternator and away you go.

Irish wiring regulations - not neutralised

I just don't get it, in the UK if you connect the earth rod installation to the neutral of an overhead TT system then you create a problem that is deemed so dangerous that it could easily kill someone even if all the required RCD's are present and working, yet in Ireland if you don't do it its...

Irish wiring regulations - not neutralised

He probably will, I think he wants to make it right whether he thinks its serious or not but I won't see him until monday, I only wanted to know what the meaning of neutralised meant but I found it on google anyway and to me it doesn't seem like he needs to jump on the next plane over there and...

Irish wiring regulations - not neutralised

I (and he probably) would take it a bit more seriously if someone could tell me why it makes it unsafe. I've done countless electrical installations exactly that way in the UK and one one occasion been told it was an excellent job by an ELECSA assessor no less.

Irish wiring regulations - not neutralised

This forum certainly is way different to any other one I've ever been on, the only people that post here seem to be from the John Ward school of electrics, follow the rules to the letter and never ever waiver from them no matter what because big boss man says so. Has no-one ever heard of fun on...

Irish wiring regulations - not neutralised

From Google. What is a Neutralising link? The main protective conductor connects the DSO neutral to the consumer's earth electrode via the main earthing terminal. It is commonly called the Neutralising Conductor. It must be insulated and have the same cross-sectional area as that of the...

Irish wiring regulations - not neutralised

I and he already know that, but its a free world and they can do what they want at the end of the day. If people don't want to say then that's absolutely fine, they are entitled to do that but people come on these board all the while asking for help about stuff that should be done by registered...

Irish wiring regulations - not neutralised

My mate has family in Southern Ireland and he has been over there a couple of times this year helping them renovate a property. He has been upgrading the electrics for them and he says its an overhead supply with an earth rod. He did say there was a wire coming from the meter area to the...

    Holiday let Fire Alarm

Basically yes. It might possibly last that long in a lab environment in perfect controlled conditions but out in the real world do you really think a tiny little battery will still be functioning and transmitting perfectly over radio waves a decade after it is installed. I've not fitted or even...

    Holiday let Fire Alarm

Do these still need a mains supply, if so it might not always be so simple. If not then radio interlinked wont last anywhere near 10 years despite any claims otherwise. 1 year maybe, 10 years no way hosea.

UK Failing Apprentice - What to do

Well what would you call him? He did 2 years at college from 16 to 18, now he works for us. He is just a worker now like every one else. I call him an apprentice because an apprenticeship used to be 7 years long. We pay him NMW. As for disillusioned, I think he's gutted that the real world...

UK Failing Apprentice - What to do

Err... he's had a chance, we took him on. I' ve told him about his phone but he pulls it out of his pocket probably 20 or 30 times a day. He has now taken to hiding behind the van to facebook when he goes to get something. Once someone has the phone addiction there's no coming back from it no...

UK Failing Apprentice - What to do

Depends what you mean by "apprentice", this isn't some college kid who still needs his nappy changing, he is 19 now and finished his training a year ago, he is just another paid worker now who doesn't take anything on board you tell him but thats his loss, I don't mind if I have to do everything...

UK Failing Apprentice - What to do

It may well be but its pretty accurate. If he is daft enough to not listen and therefore not progress he is going to be on rubbish money forever and if he isn't capable of doing more technical things then all that's left to do is be a van monkey and a brush monkey. The young of today seem to...

UK Failing Apprentice - What to do

Its probably facebook related, ours is still hopeless and still has the attention span of a tick tock video, we only keep him because 1, he hasn't got attitude and 2, he is cheap labour. I couldn't get a labourer with half a brain to do what he does for the money we give him so stupidity does...
