    IR value on ring

Carried out an EICR on an older installation at the start of the week prior to a mains board swap over. I had a low reading on one of the ring main IR tests, between live & neutral 0.02MOhms. I couldn’t see anything plugged in or switched on anywhere on the circuit & at that point I couldn’t...

    Voltage on disconnected cable

Suppose what I really need to know is there any way to get rid of it & if not is it safe to leave in?

    Voltage on disconnected cable

Used my multifunction tester to check voltage. So what causes this? Have never come across this before.

    Voltage on disconnected cable

I think I may be going mad...job I was at today there was a strip light needing replaced, were 3 feeds & neutrals and a feed & switch wire at it. Was sure I marked everything ok but as there are ceiling panels going on before the light goes back on I thought I’d do a quick check, turned light...

    Carbon Monoxide detector required?

Working at a house this week & they’ve just installed a log burner in the living room, the metal flue goes up the inside of the existing chimney breast. I know there is a Carbon Monoxide detector required in the living room, but the breast & flue also runs through a bedroom in the room above the...

    Thermal store heating system

Looking for some advice on rectifying someone’s heating system. The system was working but when it stopped working the sparkie who came to fix it messed about with loads of the wiring now it’s not working great. I’m going to look at it to try & get it going correctly tomorrow so just want to be...

    Old conduit/boxes problem!

Mmm, possibly. That mean I would just have to take couple of & thread this onto the conduit?

    Old conduit/boxes problem!

Can anyone link me up to where I can buy these old bushes? Just so I can show my wholesaler exactly what I need. Have had 3 ordered & none were what I’m after!

    Old conduit/boxes problem!

Below is picture of one of the boxes that is metal that I came across after first post. As you can see, a 19mm bush probably won’t pull conduit tight to the box.

    Old conduit/boxes problem!

No, I meant similar to like a penny washer but with a hole in middle that a bush could go through. This would then pull down onto the box when the bush is tightened. Don’t know but it doesn’t sound the best way off doing it. Got a link?

    Old conduit/boxes problem!

What exactly is it I’m asking for then as I’ve tried explaining it to my local wholesaler & they’re unsure of what I’m needing. Useless! Yes. Is there anything on the market like a washer I could use, one that a 3/4” bush (assuming you can still buy these somewhere) that the bush would go...

    Old conduit/boxes problem!

Was carrying out an inspection on a property & couldn’t get a ZS reading at a socket. Turns out some idiot decided to remove the old 1G socket & box which was fitted an a metal conduit system. The 16mm conduit by looks off it. They’ve decided to just fit a fast fix box for a 2g socket with the...

    SWA main supply questions.

Couple of questions. I’m at a job just now where the existing tails from the meter needed upgraded, they were 15m away from the fuse board & weren’t of an adequate size. The customer has already run a 3-core 25mm SWA to existing fuse board which will be upgraded to a 17th Edition consumer unit...

    Main service fuse blowing...

Have been reluctantly roped into checking out a job for someone, more as a favour. It’s a hall that is used every week but not every day. Basically one of the three main fuses has blown twice now so I’m told. It’s a 3 phase supply each with a 63A fuse. The fuse is housed in one of those old 3...

Minimum IP rating for wall mounted external industrial socket?

What is the Minimum IP rating for wall mounted external industrial socket? It's to be outside & only used for plugging in a generator that will give house temporary power through a changeover switch in the case of power cuts.

Heat mat fault, neutral earth reading...

You think this is why I'm getting those readings? Spoke to joiner today, says it's one big continuous run, one mat. It's only an area of 6m squared. He says hotter & colder tiles are common due to density of tile adhesive. Can I ask why I've to test the sensor? Afraid I've not got an IR...

Heat mat fault, neutral earth reading...

Ok. Update, she doesn't seem to think it's working correctly as there's one area where a tile is cold, then one where a tile is a lot warmer than the rest. I redid all the tests today, resistance between the two conductors is as it should be, around the 58 ohms mark, I done an IR again live to...

Heat mat fault, neutral earth reading...

Resistance was about 58 ohms which was pretty much bang on for the size of mat. Correct voltages measured at cable that leaves programmer, odd voltages taken at the cable repair crimps. The cable that leaves the programmer is obviously not the same cable/wires that heats the mat, they...

Heat mat fault, neutral earth reading...

Yes. Checked the resistance & it was fine & so was the IR from conductors to earth. Strange.

Heat mat fault, neutral earth reading...

A neighbours underfloor bathroom heating mat stopped working a while back, she asked me to look at it today. Turns out when it was installed the joiner had accidentally burst the cable for it. It's a small thin blue cable that heats up that has two conductors & an earth. Someone has done a...
